
Benefits
Program benefits include a tax-free
stipend for those Foster Grandparents who meet income eligibility
guidelines, to offset the cost of volunteering.
According to law, the stipend does not count as income
when determining eligibility for benefits including:
- Food stamps
- Energy assistance
- Subsidized housing
- Rent
- VA pension
Those Foster Grandparents who are eligible for the
stipend will also be entitled to the following designated paid holidays
based on the number of hours volunteered:
- Annual state holidays
- Annual discretionary day
- Sick leave benefits
- Earned vacation days
In addition Foster Grandparents are covered during
regular service hours by:
- Accident insurance
- Personal liability insurance
- Excess auto liability insurance (if you drive)
Foster Grandparents are provided transportation costs
(or receive assistance with the costs) to and from assignments and
official activities.
A daily meal or meal assistance may be provided to
the Foster Grandparent at times when appropriate.
Foster Grandparents are required to have a physical
examination prior to assignment and annually thereafter. Physical
examinations are provided by Fort Hays State University Student
Health and at other sites located in the Foster Grandparent Program
service area.
Foster Grandparents receive several types of training
to enhance performance of their assignments, including:
- Orientation to the Foster Grandparent Program
- Orientation to their volunteer assignment site
- Regular site visits by program staff
- Monthly in-service training
Recognition events are provided for all Foster Grandparents
during the year.
Most importantly Foster Grandparents have the satisfaction
of knowing that they are making a positive difference in the life
of a child.
