"Educators strive to create a hospitable climate for learning - an environment that inspires curiosity, investigation, observation, critical analysis, healthy debate, and resonable conclusions. What better way than by focuassing on a topic that people everywhere agree is important?

That's why Earth Science Week 2009 calls attentions to the theme of this year's celebration: "Understanding Climate." From the headlines of newspapers to the footnotes of scholarly journals, the issue is discussed with urgency by people of all walks of life. Climate - the weather pattern occurring in a given place over time - provides educators today with a 'teachable moment' for Earth science."

- Geoff Camphire, Manager of Outreach Programs, American Geological Institute

This year, you're invited to join the millions of participants in all 50 states and nations worldwide who are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the first Earth Science Week. This exciting event has grown steadily in momentum and participation since the American Geological Institute held the first Earth Science Week in 1998.

The American Geological Institute established Earth Sciences Week in 1998 to raise awareness of the geosciences and their importance to sociey. It is supported by the US Geological survey, NASA, NOAA, the National Park Service, and the AAPG Foundation.
