The opportunities posted below have been fowarded to the department to encourage application and or participation. Please read the materials closely to ensure that you meet the requirements and deadline for application.

FHSU Opportunities

  • Anderson VIP Ambassadors - available again fall 2010 - VIP Ambassadors serve as student representatives at official FHSU events of their choice throughout the year.
  • Orientation Advisors - Orientation Advisors work with new students (both on-campus freshmen and transfers) in registering for fall classes and in their transition to FHSU.
  • Department of Geosciences student positions are available periodically. Visit the FHSU Student Employment Website for more information and to apply.

Scholarship and Grant Opportunities

  • Exploration Systems Mission Directorate Space Grant Project - They provide internships for full-time students, mentors for senior design projects, and competitions for System Engineering and research papers.
  • FHSU Department of Geosciences - The Department of Geosciences has scholarships available for both incoming freshmen and continuing students. To apply for these scholarships, and others complete the FHSU on-line Scholarship
  • AGI Minority in Geosciences - Recipients of AGI Geoscience Student Scholarships are provided with mentors, scholarship support and an award for professional development expenses, such as field camp tuition, professional society memberships, and/or travel and registration to a professional meeting of one of AGI's member societies. If you are enrolled in an earth science education or geoscience degree program and would like to apply for a scholarship, please review the qualifications and procedures outlined at http://www.agiweb.org/mpp. Applications are due in March of every year.
  • Application.KAS Research Grant Scholarships - Award amounts are $500 for undergraduates and $1000 for graduates. Funding is to be used to pay for expenses incurred in doing research.
  • Application.KGF Scholarships - Available to Junior, Senior, or Graduate students majoring in Geology. Average scholarship amount $1000.00.
  • AAPG Foundation Grants-in-Aid Program - Deadline Jan. 31 of every year. Available to geoscience graduate students who require funding for research projects.Grants are based on merit, and in part, on the financial needs of the applicant. The program focuses on support of qualified candidates for masters or equivalent degrees. Factors weighed in the selection of successful applicants include: qualifications of the applicants as indicated by past performance, originality and imagination of the proposed project, support of the department in which the work is being done, and perceived significance of the project to petroleum, energy minerals and related environmental geology. Monetary awards up to a maximum amount of $2000. Grants are to be applied to expenses directly related to the student’s thesis work, such as fieldwork, laboratory analyses, etc.
  • Desk and Derrick Educational Trust Scholarships - Accept applications until April 1st for the academic year from students seeking degrees in field related to the petroleum, energy and allied industries. There are twelve $1500 scholarship grants available for full time students.
  • EDMAP Funding - EDMAP, the training component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, supports both graduate students and undergraduates (Juniors and Seniors who have completed requisite course work in field methods). EDMAP provides funding to students who are doing research involving a significant amount of geologic mapping. In FY2007, EDMAP supported 60 students at 34 universities across the nation. The maximum award to graduate students is $15,000 and the maximum award to undergraduates is $7,500. Note, that each dollar from the EDMAP program needs to be matched by the university. Proposals must be written and submitted by the professor who supervises the students.

Internship/Fellowship Opportunities

  • Manicouagan Impact Research Program - The program is sponsored by the University of New Brunswick's Planetary and Space Science Center (PASSC). They currently have 3 PhD positions and a MSc/MEng position available as part of MIRP. This is a 10-year long program started in 2007 designed to further understanding of large complex impact structers and their relation to other craters developed on Earth and other planets. Prospective candidates should enjoy the outdoors and wilderness camping for an 8-week field season. The 3 PhD projects are: 1) Hydrothermal Processes Within the Manicouagan Impact Structure, 2) Metamorphic Aureole Beneath the Manicouagan Impact-Melt Sheet, and 3) Impact-melt sheet- basement relations at Manicouagan. The MSc/MScE project covers the Geomatics of the Manicouagan Impact Structure. Those interested should send a CV to Karen Shea at kshea@unb.ca.
  • Laura W. Bush Traveling Fellowship - This program provides funds to a student to work in a foreign country on a project that aligns with the UNESCO mandate, which includes the natural sciences. We encourage any student doing field research which connects geosciences with improving human development to consider applying for this program. Applications are due in March of every year.
  • EARTH Magazine - EARTH Magazine lists many jobs and internships on their site. .
  • Marshall Space Flight Center - The center has many internship and fellowship opportunities available.
  • Johnson Space Center - The center has many internship and fellowship opportunities available.
  • Glenn Research Center - They have many higher education programs available that can lead to foregoing opportunities.
  • Ames Research Center - The center has many internship and fellowship opportunities available.
  • United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation - The division of Science and Technology has many internships and fellowships open to faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students.
  • NASA Undergraduate Student Researcher's Program - This program is an undergraduate internship program for science, engineer, and mathematics majors.
  • Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program in Astrobiology at the SETI Institute - This program allows you to work with scientists at the SETI Institute, as well as with the NASA Ames Research Center on projects in the field of astrobiology, from microbiology to planetary geology to observational astronomy. The program lasts from June to August every year. Current sophomore or junior undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Application deadline is in February.
  • Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanography - This program is designed for science, math and engineering students who have just finished their junior year. Talented students finishing their sophomore year, or seniors graduating after the fall semester will also be considered. The program could include lab work, data analysis, instrumentation development, dynamic modeling, or a research cruise. It lasts for 10 weeks starting in June and ending in August. The deadline for applications is March 1 of every year.
  • Global Change Education Program - The Global Change Education Program consists of two separate programs, the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and the Graduate Research Environmental Fellowship (GREF). SURE and GREF are 10-week programs from June to August. SURE starts out as a week-long orientation and research training session at a university, then leads into a 9-week research session with a mentor at a Department of Energy facility. SURE ends with a symposium and poster session at a Department of Energy national laboratory. GREF lets you participate in SURE orientation, have long-term Department of Energy mentoring, and participate in the SURE program's final symposium. To be a candidate for SURE, students must have finished their sophomore year by June of that year, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, be planning a career in global change sciences, and be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Applications are available in October and are due in early February.
  • Students on Ice Expeditions - This expedition provides the opportunity to study in one of the most exceptional and remote places on Earth. One of the objectives of this expedition is to provide students from around the world the opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing experiential learning and field experience during the early stages of their academic career. Once in Antarctic waters, all students will make frequent field trips to the Antarctic mainland via inflatable Zodiacs from the main ship. These landings will be supplemented by lectures and lab exercises in dedicated space aboard the expedition vessel, the M/V Ushuaia. The 2009 program was successful, so they will hold another student expedition in 2011.
  • Global Vision International Research Expeditions - Gain valuable fieldwork experience as an active member of a Global Vision International research expedition Interns participate in a combination of Geographical, flora and fauna, mountain and forest research projects in a selection of scientific programmes worldwide. There is also a free Careers Abroad fieldwork placement and job vacancy service for all interns once they have participated with GVI.   • EPA Career Listings - Careers are available for environmental and physical scientists, chemists, geologists, hydrologists, physicists, oceanographers, and microbiologists, as well as others. Scientists must have a bachelor's degree in their field, and many who do research in EPA labs have doctoral degrees. Project management experience, communication skills, and knowledge of environmental laws and regulations are helpful. Specific qualifications for positions vary.

This program is focused on building exposure of the geosciences to the general public and to facilitate communications within the geosciences community. This position will work with other AGI staff to plan and execute conferences, build new communications approaches to facilitate information exchange between geoscientists and AGI’s 45 Member Societies, work on initiatives to enhance the visual and popular accessibility of geosciences information, and to help broaden exposure of AGI’s activities and mission.   • Professional Geologist II - The Department of Health and Environment in Shawnee County is looking for a geologist to act as project manager on assigned projects in the Landfill and Dry Cleaning Programs where ongoing investigation and cleanup are occurring.
