Graduate
Assistantships
Fort Hays State University offers three classifications of graduate
assistantships:
1. Graduate Teaching Assistantships
(GTAs)
2. Research Assistantships (RAs)
3. Graduate Assistantships (GAs)
All three differ with regard to the types of functions they carry
out for the university. GTAs support teaching operations, RAs
support research operations, and GAs support service operations.
The other primary difference between the three types of graduate
assistantships is the source of funding. Graduate assistants are
funded through the Graduate School as well as through departments/units.
Graduate School funded graduate assistants are eligible for tuition
assistance and are limited to 19 hours per week for 16 or 32 weeks.
Department or unit-funded graduate assistants are not eligible
for tuition assistance and are limited to 20 hours per week for
a duration determined by the hiring department/unit.
