Steps to Writing a Grant Proposal
Step 1: Develop an Original Idea

Contact the Grants Office

Helps identify potential sources of
funding
Assists in proposal planning
Identifies FHSU faculty with similar interests
Step 2: Pre-Proposal
Activies
You:
Review potential sources of funding
Draft proposal
Draft work plan and estimated budget
Contact potential funders for more information
Grants Facilitator:
Identifies previously funded projects
Assists in developing proposal
Serves as liaison with agency personnel, if necessary
Assists with budget development, if needed
Step 3: Draft Formal
Proposal
You:
Prepare a complete draft of proposal
Ask colleagues to review and critique
Determine if IRB
review is needed (human subjects, animal care, biohazards...)
Grant Facilitator:
Critiques proposal
Reviews proposal for compliance with sponsor and FHSU
guidelines
Grants Facilitator and
Grants Officer:
Review draft budget
Step 4: Proposal Sign-off
You:
Obtain necessary approval from departments (library, computer
services, facilities & planning...)
Obtain signatures on Proposal
Sign-off Form from:
Give Grants Office copies of grant and sign-off
Grants Facilitator:
Facilitate sign-off process
Step 5: Prepare and Submit Proposal
You:
Make revisions on final draft
Be available for last minute discussions with deans and other
administrative personnel
Transmit proposal to funder
Grants Facilitator:
Assists with proposal submission, if needed
Step 6: Follow-up
You:
Be available if needed for negotiation, discussion, and necessary
revision
