Dr. Sonia Esquivel

Born in Mexico, like many immigrants, looking for the “American” dream, a dream that now has become a “Latina’s” reality, she and her family migrated to Garden City, in the 1970's from Chihuahua. The youngest of 10 children, and a graduate of Garden City High School, she attended Garden City Community College and earned a Associates in Nursing, then transferred to Fort Hays State, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's, then had to explain to her father why she was pursuing her Doctorado at Kansas State University. In all this time, she was doing this as a single mom, thus her legacy of "from teen mom to a Latina with a Ph.D". She now has 2 kids; Manny age 24 and Karina age 12. She loves her job at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs as a counselor and an assistant professor. Her favorite quote she lives by is by Vivian Greene, "Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain".
