FHSU Athletic Training Education Program

The Program: Freshman students gain valuable experience while observing the certified staff and athletic training program students in the athletic training rooms at Gross Memorial Coliseum and Lewis Field. Students accepted into the program (Sophomores) will be required to complete six (6) continuous semesters of athletic training clinical assignments. These assignments are arranged by the athletic training program director. Students are expected to arrange their schedules so that they will be able to attend all clinical assignments. Athletic Training students at Fort Hays State University have the opportunity to be placed with varsity athletics at FHSU, a high school, or a clinical setting for the clinical portion of the program. Students are also required to complete an internship between their junior and senior years or after completing all program requirements. Satisfactory completion of the required athletic training competencies, and completion of the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Athletic Training are required to be eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. In addition, a total of 800 clinical hours must be recorded in order to be eligible for Kansas licensure.

Admission: The Athletic Training Program at Fort Hays State University is a selective admissions program which culminates in a Bachelor of Science degree. In order to apply to the program, a student must meet minimum application standards listed below:

Students are admitted to the program on an annual basis in August. A student wishing to apply to the program must have a minimum of 30 credit hours and must complete an application packet (see below). Students transferring courses from other colleges and universities must have an official transcript from each institution evaluated by the Fort Hays State University registrar and the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) Selection Committee. A limited number of spaces are available, and therefore, selection is competitive.

Determination of admission is based on:

1) Completion of the program application form and essay.
2) Two references concerning personal characteristics of the applicant.

3) Completion of 50 hours of observation under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer (ATC) typically performed during the freshman year.

4) Must meet University admission requirements and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale.

5) Completion of 30 credit hours which count towards a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Athletic Training degree at Fort Hays State University.

6) A grade of "B" or above in HHP 280 Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries and HHP 280L Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries Clinical.
7) An interview with the ATEP Selection Committee.

Applications may be requested after January 1st of each year by contacting the Program Director. All Materials must be returned by March 15th to be considered for admission to the program for the fall semester.
