Dear Prospective Student,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Information Systems Engineering Program at Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, which is one of two programs nationwide and one among a handful worldwide. FHSU is fully accredited by several national agencies and enrolls almost 15,000 students, which has increased by more than 40% in the last five years. In addition, the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recognize FHSU as one of the nation's Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. FHSU is also a member of the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT).
Information is knowledge derived from data. The latter are recorded facts and figures that include collection, storage, management, retrieval, analysis, etc. Thus, Information System is the collection of hardware, software, data, people and procedures that work together to produce quality information. To this end, Information Systems Engineering is the effective use or "engineering" of Information Systems for a better understanding of data to optimize decision making. Therefore, ISE is a multidisciplinary area of studies that involves software, digital storage and retrieval, networks, human computer interaction, information security, digital design and electronic media. Students from the ISE Program are prepared to work with complex information systems and have the skills and knowledge necessary to advance steadily in their careers.
In this context, having a degree in ISE will make you in high demand at various federal agencies and private companies. For example, you may choose to work with one of the federal intelligence agencies under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), one of the federal National Laboratories in cutting edge research, one of the thousands of universities or at one of the Fortune 500 companies such as Google, Facebook, Boing, CISCO, Intel, etc. The choice is yours, and we are here to help you!
The degree plan of the Bachelor of Science in ISE illustrates the courses that the student will be taking within four years, consisting of 130 credit hours. Of course, you can finish the program in a shorter period if you choose to take courses during the summer and an extra course each semester. This is possible as FHSU has one of the most affordable tuitions in the nation: per credit hour undergraduate tuition at FHSU is $141 for Kansas residents, $195 for residents of nearby states and $414 for others. Moreover, FHSU has one of the best deals when it comes to transferring courses from other institutions, which could save students around two years of coursework. Further, ISE has a transfer agreement with Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado, transferring 71CH, and we are working on other transfer agreements.
Scholarships are also available, which include $2,000/semester for two years (effectively covers Kansas residents tuition fee and more), $2,000 on-campus house reduction (almost 50%), ACT Scholarship, Academic Opportunity Award, and other FHSU Scholarships, plus external ones.
