Information Systems Engineering

The Information Systems Engineering (ISE) Program at Fort Hays State University is the only one in the state of Kansas, and it is one among only a handful in the nation. FHSU is recognized as one of the nation's Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS). ISE students will learn how to effectively use or "engineer" Information Systems, which are collections of hardware, software, data, people and procedures that work together to produce quality information. Therefore, the ISE program is a multidisciplinary area of study that involves software, digital storage and retrieval, networks, human computer interaction, information security, digital design and electronic media. Upon graduating from the ISE program, students will be prepared to work with complex information systems and have the skills and knowledge necessary to advance in their careers. Graduates with a degree in ISE are in high demand at various federal agencies and private companies.

Interesting Quotes About ISE:

Information Systems Engineering is a rapidly growing field and CNET news recently reported that the business website "focus.com" named it as one of the best jobs in America. It is Eagle Communication's position that an Information Systems Engineering degree program will play an important role in the future of Fort Hays State University as well as have significant positive impact in this part of the country.
Engineering programs often drive innovation and economic development. As a growing broadband company, we recognize this fact and the value that this unique degree will provide to support our work, those in agriculture, the petroleum industry, alternative energy, and more.
-- Travis Kohlrus (Broadband Director of Community Relations and Product Development, Eagle Communications)

We need more eyes on technology issues--those who understand the problem and can also develop solutions. As a result, an Information Systems Engineering (ISE) degree and the skills it presents are more important now than ever before. ISE-type proficiencies will become the defacto standard, rather than the exception for future employers. As our company continues to expand into different sectors of technology, we would not only be more than happy to hire ISE graduates and we would be highly interested in a work study program giving those students on the job training.
As a FHSU graduate (INT and CIS degrees) and current holder of a CISSP certification, I understand the talent and marketability of high tech student, but I also understand the solutions those high tech students can bring to this area, our industries, and to the nation...further cementing the role of FHSU as a leader in technology education.

Google is highly supportive of the effort to launch an Information Systems Engineering Program at Fort Hays State. Increasing the breadth of technical offerings at Fort Hays State should be good for the students, Kansas and industry. Many technical projects involve working across interdisciplinary areas, and Information Systems Engineering provides a structural framework for such efforts. A 2009 CNN study listed Systems Engineering as one of the best career fields (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bestjobs/2009/snapshots/1.html). - Scott Green (Engineering Director, Google Inc.)
