KFHS Radio is under the sponsorship of KFHS Broadcast Council, a student based organization for those interested in the broadcast media field. KFHS Radio is also under the sponsorship of the Information Networking & Telecommunications Department and is located in Heather Hall on the campus of Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. KFHS is a student operated radio station, and student DJ’s make up the staff of KFHS Radio.

KFHS is equipped with a voice tracking system which allows the station to broadcast programs 24/7.

KFHS transmits LIVE via the Internet through Windows Media Player, and is broadcast through Hays cable TV channel 67.

KFHS Radio is the student radio voice of FHSU students.

1950-2000

1950
FHSU President M.C. Cunningham hires Jack R. Heather to develop the Radio program. 2 two-credit-hour courses are offered by the Speech Department, Radio Speaking and Radio Broadcasting. Original equipment included a homemade control board, remote amplifier, two turntables, a record disc cutter and a Brush audio tape recorder that utilized paperbacked tape. Two studios and a control room are located in Sheridan Coliseum’s second floor.

1952
Broadcast curriculum now totals 11 hours. Program development continues for KAYS Radio in Hays and KSAL in Salina . The first 13-part radio series, “This is Kansas Industry” is developed for airing on western Kansas stations.

1955
The series “The Beginning of the End” and “The Faculty Speaks” are developed and aired on Hays and other western Kansas radio stations. Other series developed during the decade include “Kansas Panorama, Past and Present,” “Folk Tales of the Prairie,” “Kansas Campus Report,” and “Coaches Corner.”  Radio programs and series are aired in Hays, Colby, Great Bend , Dodge City , Salina and Phillipsburg as well as stations on the K-State Tape Network.

1956
Courses revised to reflect the new medium of television.

1958
Six Radio courses now offered.

1960
First new professional audio board purchased.
Eighteen hours of coursework offered.

1962
Campus radio station, KFHS, begins operation to give students practical experience.
KFHS Radio is connected to the Memorial Union and uses the public address system.

1963
KFHS Radio becomes a carrier current station broadcasting to Custer Hall dorm.

1964
KFHS Radio connected to the other residence halls, McGrath, Agnew, McMindes and Wiest.

1965
Radio/TV operations move to new facilities in Malloy Hall second floor. Course hours total 22.

1973
New radio board purchased.

1975
Kansas Association of Broadcasters appoints Jack Heather as chairperson of the new Internship Committee. He serves four years.

1976
New academic position allocated and filled for a total of three unclassified staff.

1977

Curriculum expands with addition of two film courses.

1979
Civil service engineering position approved and filled by Ralph Baxter.

1981
Radio-TV-Film/CCTV operation moves into its own building, Heather Hall. Heather Hall is specifically designed for radio and television broadcasts, with studios for both.

First live FHSU basketball telecasts made from Gross Memorial Coliseum.

1986|
First broadcast career conference held in cooperation with FHSU journalism department and five area high schools.

1988
Jack Heather retires after 38 years. Mike Leikam becomes Director.

1989
KFHS Radio begins broadcasting high school football games. New mixer and radio remote gear purchased for radio station.

1990
KFHS Radio expands broadcast area to include city of Hays , through Hays Cable FM. New faculty position added to teach radio and news writing courses.

1991
Radio and TV faculty and staff instrumental in developing classroom and implementing technology.

1992
Department Program name changes from “Radio, TV, and Film” to “Telecommunications and Media Services”

1993
Telecommunications and Media Services divided into two areas - Academic and Service. Academic area renamed “Information Networking and Telecommunications (INT) Department.”

Service area named “Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technology.” Mike Leikam goes on sabbatical while Jay Gillette serves as Interim Director.

1994
Mike Leikam returns as Director. CTELT evolves as separate Department.

1995
New Information Networking and Telecommunications curriculum approved by Board of Regents. Three emphases are taught:  Media Studies, Telecommunications, and Computer Networking.

1996
Information Networking and Telecommunications (INT) approved as a department.

The first INT website is created with four pages.

1997
INT degree begins with 18 majors. Development of on-line INT courses begins.

1998
Digital audio editing system added to radio production room.

1999
Mike Leikam resigns in May as INT Chairperson after 11 years.

Dr. Mark Bannister is named new INT Department chairperson.

KFHS Radio goes live on the World Wide Web.

2000
Ralph Baxter retires as Chief Engineer at the end of July after 31 years. Gary Hoffman hired as INT Department Technical Engineer.

KFHS Radio moves to 98.3 on Hays Cable-FM.

INT Department assists with first live Internet streaming of FHSU Commencement ceremonies over the World Wide Web.
