Among the nations in the world today,
the USA is undoubtedly one of the most powerful nations – militarily,
economically, and culturally. The USA has the largest national
economy – an economy built at least in part on an ability
to export from and to import to places throughout the world. Another
measure of the USA’s involvement internationally is the fact
that the USA has a military presence in about 130 countries. To
understand the USA’s place in the world, and to understand
the world, an international perspective is helpful.
Beginning in Fall 2005, FHSU students will have an opportunity
to complete an International Studies Certificate or an International
Studies Minor. Anticipated benefits of the programs include:
Global awareness: Opportunities to (a) become divested of ethnocentrism
and xenophobia; (b) become more open to the importance of other
regions, countries, and cultures; and (c) become more aware of
the impact of foreign events on one’s life.
Potential impact on employability: International businesses and
organizations, and other employees, may find students who have
some exposure to International Studies to be attractive candidates
for employment.
Knowledgeable: Greater knowledge of geography, history, ideas,
and contemporary events that help explain today’s world.
Aware of diversity: An understanding of, and sensitivity to, different
cultures in the world; basic ability to interact with persons from
different backgrounds.
Both the International Studies Certificate and the International
Studies Minor are adaptable: students can choose from several courses
as part of their responsibilities to complete either the
Certificate
or the Minor.
