Global awareness: Divested of ethnocentrism and xenophobia; open to the importance of other regions, countries, and cultures; awareness of the impact of foreign events on oneÕs life.

 

Adaptable:  Ability to choose between, and focus on, any of the many options available in todayÕs world.

 

Employable: Attractive to businesses and non-profit organizations concerned about or affected by international matters.

 

Knowledgeable: Greater knowledge of geography, history, ideas, contemporary events, that help explain todayÕs world.

 

Aware of diversity: An understanding of, and sensitivity to, different cultures in the world; basic ability to interact with persons from different backgrounds.

Goal 1: Greater understanding and appreciation of the interconnectedness of today's world.

Goal 2: Greater understanding of historical and contemporary influences that contributed and are contributing to world events and world issues.

 

Goal 3: Increased analytical and affective skills.

REQUIRED (3 hours)

All students are required to complete any two of the three courses listed in International Studies in the Liberal Arts section of the General Education program.  In order to receive the International Studies Certificate, the student would have to complete the International Studies course not taken for General Education credit.

ELECTIVE (6 hours)

Choose any two of the following courses, but no more than one from the same department.

-ECFI 645 International Finance

-GSCI 104 Cultural Geography
-GSCI 322 Latin American Geography
-GSCI 644 Climatology

-HIST 350 Latin American Civilization
-HIST 646 American Diplomatic History Since 1914

-IDS 405 Heritage: Society, Science & Culture Since 1700 (can also be used to meet Gen Ed requirements)

-IDS 499 Global Environmental Issues (can also be used to meet Gen Ed requirements)

-MLNG 112 Great Works in Translation (can also be used to meet Gen Ed requirements)

-MLNG 605 French Civilization
-MLNG 612 German Civilization
-MLNG 623 Spanish Civilization
-MLNG 624 Latin-American Civilization

-MGT 606 International Business
-MKT 606 International Marketing

-POLS 230 Introduction to International Relations (can also be used to meet Gen Ed requirements)

-POLS 631 U.S. Foreign Policy
-POLS 632 Problems and Issues in World Politics
-POLS 640 Comparative Politics
-POLS 675 Seminar: International Law
-POLS 675 Seminar: International Political Economy
-POLS 675 Seminar: Comparative Political Economy

In order to earn the certificate, the student must receive at least a "C" in each class.

Public presentations by students.

 

Student portfolio.

 

Entry and exit evaluations of students.

 

Number of students in the program.

 

Follow-up regarding alumnae successes and relevance of the program to their careers and to their understanding of and participation in international matters.

 

Final paper, written either for this program or a modified version of a paper written for a class.
