Academic Advising

Advisors are available to assist Justice Studies students with:

  • Deciding courses and development of programs of study
  • Selection of second degree, additional major, cognates and specializations
  • Review of degree requirement
  • Planning annual enrollment
  • Information on dropping and adding courses
  • Referral to other university resources
  • Discussions of possible internships and independent studies

Both distance education and on-campus students should schedule a 15 minute appointment with their respective advisor during the first week of each semester and prior to pre-enrolling for the next semester(s).

UPON SCHEDULING YOUR APPOINTMENT, QUESTIONS THAT YOU SHOULD PREPARE TO ADDRESS:

Freshmen

  • Why did you select Justice Studies as your major?
  • What role do you see your advisor having and what do you hope that he/she can help you with?
  • What do you see as your greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses?
  • What are your academic interests and personal interests (e.g., hobbies)?
  • In what ways do you want to grow intellectually and personally?
  • What major challenges do you expect this year?
  • What extracurricular activities do you think that you might like to get involved in?
  • Describe an accomplishment you are proud of, and how you achieved it.
  • Describe a significant challenge and what you did to overcome it.
  • What consideration have you given to life after college?
  • How do you expect this major to help you with your future plans?
  • Do you know the graduation requirements for your degree and field areas?

Sophomores

  • If you have just changed your major, what attracted you to criminal justice?
  • Upon completing one year in your major, how do you feel about it?
  • What do you like most and least about the major?
  • Over the past year have you had any difficulties with your coursework or studies? If so, what were they? What have you done to address them?
  • What general elective courses and free electives do you see helping to supplement your required courses that will give you the competitive edge?
  • What field areas of criminal justice have you found to be particularly appealing?
  • What extracurricular activities have you pursued?
  • How do you plan to develop and demonstrate your interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills through activities outside of your coursework?
  • In what ways do you plan on getting field experience through work/internship experience or volunteer activities?

Juniors

  • Do you know the graduation requirements for your degree and field areas, and have you met them?
  • If you have just changed your major, what attracted you to criminal justice?
  • What field area are you most interested in?
  • What general elective courses do you see helping to supplement your required courses that will give you the competitive edge?
  • Do you plan on doing an internship this year?
  • Have you written a resume?
  • Employers are looking for someone with good communication skills, interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, and leadership skills. Please explain how you have begun to develop and demonstrate these skills, and how you plan to continue to do so over the next two years.
  • Employers are also looking for people with experience in the field. How have you planned to gain experience through volunteer activities, internships or employment?
  • Have you done any career exploration?

Seniors

  • What goals do you want to achieve this year, and what is your plan for achieving them?
  • Have you acquired experience in the field, or do you still need to plan an internship, volunteer activity or some type of employment to gain the experience?
  • How have you developed and demonstrated your communication, interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills?
  • Do you have a resume?
  • What are your plans after completing your Bachelor's Degree in Justice Studies?
  • What help do you need with your Job Search or Graduate School application procedures?
  • Have you completed an internship or do you plan on completing an internship this year?
