Director's Update
June 2013
The Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) celebrated the culmination of two years at the Academy with 27 third year students and their families on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The completion ceremony was very well attended with some three hundred people joining in to celebrate.
As has been in the past, many of the KAMS students will continue their education here at Fort Hays State University and several others in Kansas universities. Nine of the Academy completers will continue on at Fort Hays State University, three students will attend Kansas State University, five students will go to the University of Kansas, and two students will study at Wichita State University. Seven students from the class will attend universities outside of Kansas with one student attending the University of Rochester in New York, one student attending Iowa State University, one student attending Rice University in Texas, one student at Missouri S&T, one to Rhodes University in Tennessee, one student attending the Colorado School of Mines, and one student attending at the University of Denver in Colorado. One student is undecided at the writing of this article.
We are very proud of these students and what they have accomplished in their two years at the Academy. We know that these young people will have a positive impact on our state, our country, and the world. We want to wish them added success as they move forward in their education, as they establish careers, and in their lives. It will be great to look at these young people ten years down the road to see what they are doing.
We are excited for this coming year when the fifth class of students arrives at Fort Hays State University and the Academy! We have bright young minds coming to study here from Kansas as well as China and South Korea. These incoming students, alongside with our returning KAMS students, will set new heights when it comes to academics and research.
Two of our KAMS third year students, Hayley Disney and Quentin Aker, just returned from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona. They completed with their research against students from across the United States and around the world. They had a fantastic experience and learned greatly from this experience.
You are always welcome to visit the Academy. We are located on campus at Custer Hall 241. Our students are also housed in Custer Hall so that makes for a great Academy setting. If you would like, you can drop us an e-mail at kams@fhsu.edu, give us a call at (785) 628-4690, or visit our website www.fhsu.edu/kams.
Sincerely,
Ron Keller
