Thank you for visiting the Web pages of the Kansas Association for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages and Bilingual Educators (KATESOL/BE). For a quarter of a century, KATESOL has been promoting the interests of ESL/ESOL/EFL teachers from Kansas. Our 2004 Conference in Hays, Kansas, was enjoyed by 300 attendees! Our current membership drive should bring us to 275 or higher, with members reflecting all facets of TESOL/BE activity in the state: P-12, higher ed, and adult/continuing educators.

A big accomplishment this election season was KATESOL's support of Kansas legislators who bravely had voted and passed a new law giving in-state status to immigrant Kansans. KATESOL/BE is determined to continue advocating for the English language learners of Kansas and for increased attention to the value of all language learning experiences, for teachers as well as students.

The next annual KATESOL/BE Conference will be held on February 18-19, 2005, in Emporia, Kansas, where 400 participants are anticipated. For more information about this event, please go to www.katesol.org/katesolbe2005 . We're looking forward to continued collaboration with colleagues in KNEA (Kansas National Education Association), KSWLA (Kansas World Language Assocation) and KAEA (Kansas Adult Education Association) who share KATESOL's vision of success for language learners of all ages.

One important feature at KATESOL/BE 2005 in Emporia will be the first annual KATESOL Honor Roll, recognizing innovative and effective teachers whose actions are making a positive difference for the English language learners of Kansas. A call for nominations is open until early January, so please send a note to HonorRoll@katesol.org to recommend your colleague or yourself!

I hope to see you in Emporia this coming February! Thank you again for visiting the KATESOL/BE Web pages.
