Rape and Sexual Assault Statistics and Information


  • A woman is beaten every 15 seconds.
  • Domestic violence causes more injury to women than car accidents, mugging, and rape combined.
  • 1 in 5 women victimized has been victimized repeatedly by the same person.
  • About 1/3 of male batterers are professionals (doctors, psychologists, lawyers, ministers, executives, etc.).
  • 22 to 35% of women visiting the ER are there because of ongoing partner abuse.
  • 1 in 4 women has a history of domestic violence.
  • No one deserves to be abused.
  • Men can be victims, too.
  • Domestic violence happens in both heterosexual and homosexual relationships.
  • Leaving a violent relationship is difficult.

  • The average age of a rapist is 31 years old.
  • 22% of imprisoned rapists report that they are married.
  • In 1 out of 3 sexual assaults the perpetrator was intoxicated, usually with alcohol.
  • 38% of rapists are friends or acquaintances of the victim.
  • 3 to 4 million women are battered each year.
  • 3 out of 4 women will be victims of at least one violent crime during their lifetime.
  • More than 40% of college women who have been raped expect to be raped again.
  • 1 out of every 7 women currently attending college has been raped.
  • The average age of a rape victim is 18.5 years old.
  • Women of ages 16 to 19 are the most likely to be raped.
  • 57% of college rape victims are attacked by their dates.
  • If you don’t hear “yes” then you don’t have consent– it’s rape.
