College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Policies for Retired Paper-Based Testing

FHSU policies for retired paper-based CLEP testing are listed below.  This information includes the title of each examination with information on the FHSU required minimum score and credit granted at FHSU. If an examination is not accepted for credit at FHSU, "Not Accepted" will appear in the FHSU Minimum Score Required section and "No Credit Awarded" will appear in the Credit Granted section. Please be sure that you also read through the "General Information" section so that you can make an informed decision about participating in the CLEP program.

You should only use the policies on this page if you are referencing a policy for a retired paper-based CLEP examination administered before April 1, 2004.

Examinations taken before 4/1/04 are a part of the now-retired paper and pencil program. CLEP transcripts show a letter "P" designating that the examinee took a paper-based CLEP test before April 1, 2004.

If you plan to take a CLEP Computer-Based examination, have taken a CLEP Computer-Based examination or have taken or plan to take a CLEP Paper-Based examination on or after April 1, 2004, you must use the current CLEP Policies to reference the FHSU minimum required score and credit awarded. CLEP transcripts show a letter "C" designating that the examinee took a computer-based content version of the test. (Note: CLEP paper-based examinations taken on or after 4/1/04 use computer-based test questions and have the same credit-granting scores as computer-based examinations.)

General Information

  • Students should consult their academic advisor and/or the transcript analysts in the Registrar's Office for specific information on how the successful completion of an examination applies to their degree program.
  • A grade of CR (Credit) is recorded on a student's transcript for successful completion of an examination that is accepted for credit.
  • No credit is awarded for a course that has been previously completed at Fort Hays State University or a transfer institution. If a student has previously enrolled in or audited a course, and received a grade, credit or an incomplete, CLEP is not a consideration.
  • No credit is awarded for an examination that is a prerequisite for a course previously passed.
  • A maximum of 30 hours of credit from credit-by-examination programs may be applied toward a Fort Hays State University degree.
  • CLEP credit policies are subject to change upon periodic review.
