Kansas High School Computer Technology
Proficiency Examination Information Guide
Scope of Test
The Computer Technology Proficiency examination is
designed to measure a student's computer technology competencies
in the following areas: (1) Operating
Systems and Hardware; (2) Computer
Software; (3) Networking
and the Internet; and (4) Social
and Ethical Issues in Computing. The examination
consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Examinees have
two hours (120 minutes) to complete the examination.
Successful completion of the examination allows students
to earn one unit of high school credit in computer technology as
approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. Testing is coordinated
and administered by Kelly Center Testing Services at Fort Hays State
University. The examination is designed by faculty in the
Department of Accounting and Information Systems at Fort Hays State
University.
Administration of the Examination
Administration of the examination is available in
the following ways:
1) On-site administration at the student's high school.
The examination is currently available only as a paper-based test.
A high school official must contact Kelly Center Testing Services
to request the test and required forms. All test materials
(test booklets [used/unused], answer sheets [used/unused], Agreement
to Test/List of Students Tested form, and test fees) must
be returned to Kelly Center Testing Services immediately after testing
for proper processing and scoring.
2) By appointment at the Kelly Center Testing Services
office. Students must contact the Coordinator of Testing Services
at the Kelly Center (785-628-4401) at least two weeks prior to a
preferred test date. A "Referral Form" will be sent
to the high school for completion. The student must present
the completed "Referral Form" on test day.
Test Fee
The test fee is $25 per examinee. The fee is
payable to Fort Hays State University by check or money order at
the time of testing.
Qualifications
High school students must be referred for testing
by the high school they are attending. The high school must
complete the "Agreement to Test/List of Students Tested"
form for each on-site administration. If a student requests
to test at Kelly Center Testing Services, a Referral Form
will be mailed to the high school. The high school must complete
the form and return it to the student. The student must bring
the form to Kelly Center Testing Services on test day.
Each student must present photo-bearing identification
(drivers license/student identification card).
Prohibited Testing Aids
Examinees are NOT permitted to use textbooks, dictionaries,
notes, or aids of any kind during the examination.
Students with Disabilities
It is the high school's responsibility to provide
appropriate accommodations for students with documented learning
and/or physical disabilities.
Scoring
The examination is scored at Fort Hays State University.
A typed score report for each examinee will be forwarded to the
high school approximately 10-15 business days after the materials
are received for scoring.
Successful completion of the examination allows students
to earn one unit of credit in computer technology proficiency as
approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. The Fort Hays State
University recommended minimum score for awarding credit is a score
of 60. Listed below is the recommended scale for converting
the examinee's score to a letter grade:

Please Note the Following Important Information
Provided by the Kansas Board of Regents:
"If a student takes the test option [for computer technology],
credit must be recorded on the transcript and a grade assigned.
We [KBOR] suggest that in assigning a grade, you use your own school's
grading system. This, however, should not fall below the following
minimal standard: A--90% or higher; B--80%-89%; C--70%-79%; D--60%-69%.
We have noted that some schools have higher grading standards than
this, in which case they should apply their own grading standards.
Please remember that credit and a grade for this
course or test must appear on the transcript. The grade must be
included in the QA [qualified admissions] grade point average, as
it is a requirement of the law."
Retake Policy
An examinee is allowed to retake the examination only
after a minimum of 30 days has lapsed since the most recent test
attempt.
Test Preparation
The Computer Technology Proficiency Examination is
based directly on the four areas of computer knowledge outlined
by the Kansas Board of Regents.
