SANDWICH IN THE WATER

Topeka, Kansas- Overview:
- This will provide a hands on, cross curriculum activity to stress the amount and proper use of the water in the major eastern Kansas lakes.
- Grade Level: 4 and 6
- Outcome:
- The student will research lakes and understand water quality/safety components in eastern Kansas lakes.
- Geographic Themes:
- place, location and environmental interaction.
- Kansas Social Studies Standards For Benchmarks:
- The student will understand the connections among people, places, and environments in the local school and community, Kansas, the U.S., and different nations in the world.
- National Geography Standards:

- The geographically informed person knows and understands the physical and human characteristics of places.
- Performance Objective:
- The student will construct a paper sandwich to illustrate knowledge in the above stated subject areas.
- Materials Needed:
- sandwich part outlines
- lake data
- water safety pamphlets
- Procedures:
Step 1 Divide class into 4 groups, assign each group a lake or lakes to research. Distribute pamphlets and resource material. Step 2 Initiate large group discussion and list facts on the chalk board creating a comparison chart. All students need to copy the chart as it is created, (be sure to discuss each of the topics mentioned in step 3.) Step 3
- Distribute Sandwich outlines and explain what needs to be included on each piece:
- Meat- historical facts of NE Kansas lakes
Cheese- water quality facts of NE Kansas lakes
Bread- water safety facts
Tomato- finish this thought A dream for future water- use...
Lettuce- list adjectives that describe water, ing words (verbs)Step 4 With the above guidelines have students complete each piece, color, cut out and assemble into a sandwich. To keep together, staple once in the center after arranging pieces to stick out on all sides. - Assessment:
- Student will complete and hand in the Submarine Sandwich, thus demonstrating knowledge in the areas of lake size, creation, water quality and safety components therein.
- Extensions:
- Create a real sandwich for the class to share and enjoy as they create their pretend sandwiches. Discuss each piece as added and how the pieces combine to create the whole and interact with one another to become one.

- Contact the US Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District or visit any of the Eastern Kansas lakes Visitor Centers to obtain pamphlets on all lakes in the state of Kansas, as well as, water safety.
