Summer Camps
d
Summer camps are always a memorable experience for youth, and KYLA
summer camp is no exception. Middle-and-high school camps provide
students with the opportunities to develop new friendships, share ideas
and experiences, and develop a deeper understanding of the many facets
of leadership. Students often establish a close bond with their college
student camp counselor who aids in clarifying and connecting the day’s sessions. More importantly, students leave camp with a real sense that they can make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others. MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR CAMP! Plan to join the fun!
Middle School Camp
r
Middle school students, grades 6 – 8 as of August 200, will spend three days and two nights on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Students stay in the Fort Hays State University residence halls rooming with another middle school camper. A variety of daily camp activities will engage students in building their leadership skills, advance their knowledge of character development, and bring awareness to civic responsibilities. Students will participate in team building activities with Project Adventure ropes course then move to the Hays Aquatic Park, to activities in the campus Quad area, and to classroom facilities. Parents are invited to attend our closing ceremony which includes a slide show presentation of each day’s events, and time for a final farewell to their newfound friends and college counselors.
Each year students attending KYLA’s middle school camp participate in a service project that provides campers with hands-on civic education application. This summer, we will once again be helping with the set-up preparations for the area’s Relay for Life walk. The coordinators for last year’s event were so impressed with our campers’ desire to be of service. Our campers filled luminary bags with sand, placed votive candles in bags, lined the edges of the Felten Middle School’s track with luminary bags, blew up balloons, hung posters they had made on the fence walls, and did anything and everything they were asked to do with energy, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to be of service for this very important event. Most impressive was the night of the event, long after camp was over and campers could go back home, many campers came to the event and walked with loved ones making the circle of giving of one’s self for the greater good complete.

High School Camp
High school students, grades 9 – 12 as of August 2008, spend four days and three nights on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Students stayed in the university residence halls rooming with another high school camper. A variety of daily camp activities engage students in enhancing their leadership skills, while providing a focus on character development and civic responsibility. Community members, college faculty and certified leadership trainers facilitate sessions on team building, networking opportunities, brainstorming ideas to become civically engaged in their own communities, staying motivated, thinking outside the box, problem solving skills, classroom etiquette and risk leadership. In addition, campers will participate in a Project Adventure ropes course. Parents are invited to attend our closing ceremonies which include a slide show presentation of each day’s events and a final farewell to their newfound friends and college counselors.
Civic Leadership is one component of KYLA’s teaching model and our high school campers will have a unique opportunity to make a difference in a community’s life. This year’s high school campers will be traveling to Greensburg, Kansas to assist with rebuilding efforts. Campers will also have the opportunity to visit with residents and hear their stories of overcoming tremendous obstacles, and dealing with the loss of material possessions. In addition, this is an opportunity of a lifetime for our campers to help breath new life back into the community by showing the residents of Greensburg they care and will continue to remind the residents of the state of Kansas that Greensburg continues to need our help and support.
