I’m not going to lie: I was excited to hear that my editor-in-chief Andrew Bauer had swine flu. Only because that meant he couldn’t travel to Lawrence to watch Fort Hays State University take on the number one nationally ranked basketball team in the country.

Hello, Winter, my cold and domineering mistress. It has been seven long months since the last time we spoke, and I have yet to relinquish the memory of your icy touch.

As I walked toward the starting point of the Haunted Campus Tour, I took in the atmosphere of a perfectly spooky evening. The clouds wisping across the sky, I looked up at a creepily hidden moon. The leaves crunched, crisp on the eerie trail. I zipped up my jacket and stuffed my hands into my pockets. I was prepared to be scared.

I arrived hot, wet and ready. That is to say, I had on too many layers, it was raining and I was prepared for an intellectually stimulating discussion about human sexuality.

You know when you eat lunch at the Memorial Union and you have to decide if you want to eat the stir fry? You know it is a gamble, but it always sounds really good? Then you eat it, and it tastes good for the first couple of bites, but it never seems to live up to the anticipation.
That is exactly how I feel when I watch the Fort Hays State University football team.

Recently, I made one of the most spinster/cat lady purchases of my life. Not only did I buy specialty wet dog food (because my dog’s been sick) and ridiculous dog sweaters (because … well, just because), but I also impulse bought pre-made cheddar popcorn (because it was low-blood -sugar hour) and a TV guide (because I will buy anything with Catherine Willows’ face on it, hence the reason I’ve seen “Species II”).

Few students on campus remember Fort Hays State University volleyball’s glory days. To the surprise of most, FHSU used to be a volleyball powerhouse in the not-so-distant past. But what happened? How did we go from such a high point to such a low point?

Oktoberfest. It is the time to celebrate the German heritage of Hays, but more importantly, it is the one time of the year when drinking beer is nearly unanimously encouraged. But while you are drowning yourself in pools of golden satisfaction, don’t forget there is an important homecoming game at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

There is a line in sports that fans shouldn’t cross.
The line is not an easy one to define by any means, and some people’s lines are thinner than other’s. However, I think it was crossed on Saturday during the 58-31 loss to Missouri Western State University.

In week one, there was very little to be enthused about. However, after this week, fall athletics has my attention for three reasons.
