Artist’s Corner: Q & A with Laura Johnson
November 5, 2009 by Jordan Rosten

Q: Why do you think I’m interviewing you?
A: Because it’s for the artist corner, and I’m an artist. I do art. And pictures.
Q: Why did you start taking pictures?
A: Umm … I don’t know. I’ve been taking pictures since I was a kid. The first camera I had, my friends and I would start taking stupid pictures.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to capture?
A: Nature stuff or anything with a lot of color.
Q: What is the best thing you ever captured on film?
A: I guess my favorite thing at the moment is a picture of the fountains outside of Tomanek. It had one leaf floating in it, and it looked sweet. The water was a really bright turquoise color.
Q: What would be your dream photography job?
A: To open my own business for senior pictures, family portraits and weddings. But to also sell my nature and other pictures.
Q: How do art classes help with your photography?
A: I think art classes in general help because you always have to start with the basics. You learn about alignment and placement, and it helps photography.
Q: If you could have a photo shoot with any celebrity, who would it be?
A: Ohh … I’d shoot Kate Beckinsale. I love her.
Q: So do you like the movie “Serendipity”?
A: I love it. It’s the most adorable movie. It’s so ironic, and everything works out perfectly.
Q: Who got you into photography?
A: My parents, probably.
Q: Do you get a lot of feedback from them?
A: They like (my photographs). I don’t get a ton of feedback from them, but they support me. They bought me my first fancy camera.
Q: Do you remember your first camera?
A: I had this long, skinny camera that would “snap” and take pictures.
Q: Did you ever have a Polaroid camera?
A: The ones that shot out the bottom? Yeah.
Q: What’s your favorite smell?
A: Vanilla.
Q: Hot Dogs. Yes or No?
A: If they’re cooked over a fire, I love them. Otherwise I’m not a fan.
Q: Did you like the Disney Channel as a kid?
A: Disney Channel? Yes! I used to watch “Hercules.”
Q: What’s your favorite picture?
A: The famous war picture with the sailor and the girl kissing. I think it’s called “After the War.
Q: Being a SAM, you seem very popular on your floor.
A: Sure (smiles).
Q: Coke or Pepsi?
A: I don’t drink pop. I stopped drinking pop my sophomore year of high school.
Q: Why did you stop?
A: I ran track and cross country. Soda slows you down.
Q: So do you run for Fort Hays?
A: No. But I kickbox every Monday and Wednesday.
Q: Do you think you could beat me up, then?
A: No. I’d feel bad. I would never hit anyone.
Q: Not even if you’re getting robbed?
A: Well, if I’m getting robbed, maybe.
Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: Mexican.
Q: What kind?
A: Authentic?
Q: No Taco Bell?
A: No. It’s nasty.
Q: What did you do for Halloween?
A: Hung out at a friend’s house, then Chucks.
Q: Do you think you can dance?
A: Yeah, I’ve taken dance since the first grade. I wish I could do ballet.
Q: Last Question: What should be the last question?
A: Hell if I know.
