Meet the April 2017 Students of the Month

On-Campus Student: Collette West

Collette is a junior Organizational Leadership major from Centerville, Utah. On-campus, she is on the softball team and in the women's choir and the National Society for Leadership and Success. Outside of school, she likes to hike, ski, sing, play the piano, do CrossFit, and hang out with friends and family. Collette decided to get involved with the department because leadership has had a profound impact on her life. She is excited to continue to learn about how to lead and collaborate with others because she believes good leadership is a powerful force for promoting change that improves the world for everyone. So far her favorite class has been LDRS 460, Global Leadership. Collette says this class opened her eyes to how much culture and complexity of global situations play into this type of leadership. She says this class also taught her how knowing yourself is important components when interacting with different cultures.

Virtual Student: Annette Webb

Annette is a General Studies major from Great Bend working toward a Certificate in Leadership Studies. In her community, Annette is involved with Crosspoint Church as part of the worship team and will work anywhere the church needs her to. Annette says her passion is helping others. Her hobbies include reading and spending time outside. Annette has four children; a 7 year old girl, 3 year old girl and twin 1 year old boys. She loves watching them play in the yard and talking to them about their day. She also says any peace and quiet time she can get is a hobby. Annette got involved with the department because she is an active participant in the Crosspoint Church worship team and has always wanted to be a problem solver and a leader. Annette says she always wanted to be a princess, but no the dress-up kind. The kind that saves people, fights in battles, and wins wars. Annette wants to be an important role model in her community and make the world a better place and Leadership Studies has taught her how do that. Her favorite class has been LDRS 302, Introduction to Leadership Behaviors, because it taught her great ways to work with others and solve problems.

International Student: Zhang Lin (Kira)

Kira comes from Zhumadian, Henan Province, China. She is a junior at Sias International University, and her majors are Organizational Leadership and Finance. While finishing up her degree, Kira is working toward acceptance into graduate school. On campus, Kira is a tutor in the Sias study tutoring center because she wants to help students understand English and that it is not difficult to learn. In her free time, she likes reading in a quiet environment, playing piano or watching movies in the theater with her friends. Kira studies Leadership because she thinks Leadership Studies can help her face situations of conflict and find the most reasonable way to handle the problem. Kira believes Leadership is good to study to know how to get along with team members and influence others. Fieldwork in Leadership Studies (LDRS 310) has been her favorite class. Through this class, Kira had developed a deep understanding of the meaning of leadership. She learned more about how to work with team members, how to communicate and solve conflicts with team members, and how to influence team members.
