Meet the April 2016 Students of the Month

On-Campus Student: Steve Dinkel

Steve is a General Studies major from Hays perusing a Leadership Studies Certificate. He has gone to school at Fort Hays on and off for a number of years. When asked what his hobbies outside of school are, he said “with a wife, four children, one grandchild, completing a church building renovation, and serving on the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance Executive Committee, going to school is my hobby.” He says he also enjoys gardening, traveling and once a month, he gets together with a group of pastors on campus to pray for students, faculty, and staff. Steve chose to get involved with the department because Leadership is an evolving subject. He also says leading in a changing culture is more challenging every day. He is a pastor at Liberty Foursquare Church and he thought Leadership Studies could give him skills to effectively lead in a constantly changing culture. Steve also likes learning alongside the Leadership students and likes the in class experience. So far his favorite class has been LDRS 300, Introduction to Leadership Concepts. He liked this class because the textbook and lectures give context to the evolution of Leadership Studies.

Virtual Student: Andrea DuBois

Andrea is from Halstead perusing a degree in General Studies with a minor in Leadership Studies. Andrea says she does not have a favorite Leadership class because they have all been enjoyable, but, if she had to choose, she would pick LDRS 306- Leadership and Team Dynamics. She liked this class because working on a team can be complicated and the class provides the tools and real life examples that can be applied to these complicated situations. She became involved with the Department because it aligns with her current career and the skills the Department nurtures are skills every one has. Andrea is passionate to share what she learns with others she works with, especially those who are starting out their career and wanting to become great leaders. She says “there is immense fulfillment in watching someone you know inspire others.” Outside of school, Andrea is involved with the high school in her community. She has fun organizing fundraisers for the their band, judging debate and forensic contests and being a member of the Dragon Backers which helps fund school activities that may not happen otherwise.

International Student: Yueying Chen (Jessica)
