Meet the December 2016 Students of the Month

On-Campus Student: Aimee Johnson

Aimee is a sophomore from Wichita majoring in Communication Studies. Currently, Aimee is working toward a Leadership Studies Certificate. Aimee balances her school work while holding a job working 30-35 hours a week. Outside of school, Aimee likes to read, play music, drink coffee, relax and spend time with family and friends. Her freshman year, Aimee was introduced to the Leadership Studies Certificate in a general education course. It sounded interesting so she talked to her advisor about it and he thought she would enjoy the classes and told her it would look great on a resume. So far, Aimee’s favorite class has been LDRS 300, she says her teacher (Justin Greenleaf) is amazing and he knows how to make the class interesting and fun.

Virtual Student: Christopher Yonish

Christopher is from Shippensburg Pennsylvania and is in his first year of the Master in Professional Studies program. His emphasis in the program is Organizational Leadership. Outside of school, Christopher loves coaching and mentoring student athletes and has coached football, basketball, and baseball for over 20 years. He is proud of everything his football team has accomplished this year. Christopher is a graduate of Penn State and he and his son go to every home football game. Christopher also likes to spend time hunting and fishing with his son and daughter. Christopher got involved with the department because he wanted to achieve more through his work coaching. When he contacted the Department of Leadership Studies, Christopher was impressed that all of his questions were answered so quickly. Christopher’s favorite class so far has been LDRS 300. He never realized leadership is still a developing field. His teacher for the course (Seth Kastle) has been an awesome professor and is very helpful in answering questions.

International Student: Hongsheng Sun (Oliver)

Oliver is a junior majoring in Organizational Leadership and minoring in International Finance at FHSU partner school SNU in China. On campus, Oliver tutors in the writing center and is active in the English Club organizing activities. Outside of school, Oliver enjoys sporting events like the Olympics, playing computer games, watching political television programs and playing the piano. He got involved with the department because he was studying electrical engineering at a school in Singapore and due to issues he faced with other students there due to cultural differences, he decided to go home and study Organizational Leadership. His favorite class so far has been LDRS 640- Principles of Civic Leadership. In this class he was able to learn new ideas on how changes and revolutions could be successfully initiated. Oliver says he knows “the government in China is more sensitive to civic movements and though I won’t be a civic leader like Martian Luther King Jr., I can apply these concepts after graduation to my organization or even my community.
