Journal of Animal Science Style - Reference Page
The Journal of Animal Science is a publication which has established its own citation style. This style is used in the FHSU Animal Sciences department and students preparing papers or assignments in that department should become familiar with the style.
The most recent version of the JAS Style Guide is available online here.
Zotero does not come preloaded with this style. In order to output bibliographies and citations in the correct format, you must install the file. First, save the file by right-clicking on the link below and choosing "save file as".

When using Zotero to create citations and a bibliography in Journal of Animal Science style, it is important to edit the data after it is imported to match style formatting.
Areas to watch out for:
- Conference Proceedings - abbreviate Conf. Proc. if included in title
- Chapters - make sure you identify the TYPE of item as chapter when citing only a section of a book. Include the chapter title and book title in the appropriate field.
- Item titles - You must have a title for each citation.
- Journal Titles - must be abbreviated in JAS style - you may have to do this yourself after importing to Zotero. Refer to the style sheet above for the correct abbreviations.
- Abstracts - when citing the abstract ONLY of an article, manually add (Abstr.) after the full citation in the bibliography
- Authors - make sure the name you download is in the correct format in the item window - last name, first name - each in its own field
