| Departmental
Events and Activities |
 There
are many activities going on year around in the Mathematics and Computer
Science Department, involving both faculty, students, and even entire
western Kansas. Most activities are, however, in the Fall semester.
Both faculty and students view the departmental activities as an indespensible
part of the college life. Fort Hays State has a chapter of Kappa Mu
Epsilon (KME), national honorary mathematics society, and a Math Club,
which provide friendship, out-of-class study and activities for students
and faculty with common interests in mathematics. Many activities
in the department are assciated with the KME or Math Club.
MAJOR EVENTS
- Faculty Get-together - The event normally
happens right before the new academic year starts, at the
end of year, or both.
- Faculty & Students Get-together - The
event happens at the beginning of the Fall semester. It
has been a welcome party for the incoming freshmen to get
acquainted with their upperclassmen and faculty, as well
as for the new faculty, if any, to know their students.
- KME/Math Club Activities - The Fall picnic
takes place in the first half of the Fall semeter. Then
there is a Fall initiation of KME. The Halloween party then
follows. The Christmas party takes place about the end of
the Fall semester, where faculty and students exchange wishes,
as well as get their friendly "complaints" across. There
are also several other KME/Math Club meetings and presentations.

Math
Relays is a math contest for high school students.
All high schools in Kansas are invited. There are both individual
and team (three people per team) events covering Using Number
Sense, Algebraic Manipulations, Informal Geometry and Measurement,
Trigonometry, Applications of Algebra and Arithmetic, and
Calculations with Calculators. This is a one day event
taking place on a Thursday of November. Every year, about
60 high schools in Kansas participated. The department has
organized the event since 1978. |
