The department faculty members are also actively pursuing professional growth. They firmly believe that an important component of being excellent in teaching is to engage in scholarly activities. They expose themselves to the new teaching techniques, reformed teaching methods, new ideas of Math Education, and new technology by attending various regional, national, and international meetings and conferences and consulting on math education issues at different education levels. They also present at professional conferences, as well as conduct research or expositary study in the area of enhencing undergraduate and 7-12 math instructions, pure and applied mathematics, or computer science. |

January Solution to problem #556 by Dr. Riazi was published in the College Mathematics Journal. Dr. Nichols became Math consultant for Rooks County Schools. Dr. Eltze attended AMS & MAA Joint Meetings in San Diego and a minicourse 'Linear Algebra Using an Interactive Text'. February Drs. Force, Farahani, and Kallam organized sessions of Science Olympiad held at FHSU. Dr. Beougher was an NCA/KSBE visitation team member for both Thomas More Prep-Marian High School and Jefferson Elementary School in Hays. March Dr. Sandstrom consulted for an out-state department of mathematics. Dr. Veed attended Kansas Section Meeting of MAA in Pittsburg and judged graduate student papers. Dr. Sandstrom was elected Secretary/Treasurer of Kansas Section of MAA. April Dr. Sandstrom had an NCA Consultant-Evaluation visit. Mrs. Schippers presented at Girl Scout Conference "Reach the Stars". Dr. Kallam helped coordinating activities of Girl Scout Conference. Drs. Nichols and Kallam, and Mrs. Schippers attended national NCTM and NCSM meetings with a presentation at NCSM, in Minneapolis, MN. Paper "Equilibrium Configurations of Point Vortices for Channel Flow Past Interior Obstacles" co-authored by Dr. Hu appeared in Eurpean Journal of Mechanics. May Dr. Beougher folio reviewed for NCTM/NCATE in Washington, DC. Dr. Kallam attended Project NOVA workshop in Cleveland, OH. June Dr. Hu attended and presented a paper to the World Congress of International Society for Analysis, its Application and Computation at the University of Delaware. Dr. Eltze attended 'Statistical Thinking with Active Teaching Strategies, an NSF workshop at Gustavus Adolphus College. Dr. Kallam attended 'Entrance Level Math' workshop at OSU July Dr. Force attended a functional analysis seminar "SUMIRFS" at Texas A&M. Dr. Kallam attended a KMSE Board meeting in Salina. (Kansas Mathematics & Science Education Coalition) August Dr. Sandstrom attended MAA Summer Fest in Atlanta as the Sacretary/Treasurer of the Kansas Section of MAA. September Dr. Kallam was awarded with NOVA grant. October Dr. Sandstrom had an NCA Consultant-Evaluator visit. Dr. Sandstrom was appointed to the Mathematics Standards Committee of the Kansas State Board of Education, which is meeting bi-mouthly for two days in Topeka. [ FYI: Three other FHSU graduates were also appointed: Lisa Colwell (Hays High teacher), Toni Priket (math consultant for Hutchinson Service Center), and Theresa Blinn (Garden City Community College teacher)] Drs. Nichols and Kallam presented to the Workshop on Problem Solving at KATM-SMARRT Conference in Wichita. Mrs. Schipper presented "Mathematics and Kansas Oil Industry" at KATM-SMARRT Conference in Wichita. Dr. Hu became a member of the review team for "Mathematical Reviews" of AMS. November Dr. Beougher presented to All-day inservice on "Realigning the K-12 Math Curriculum" for K-12 teachers at Linciln, KS. Dr. Beougher was an NCA/KSBE visitation team member for Wilson Elementary School in Hays. Dr. Beougher became Rooks County 2000 Math Consultant. Dr. Hu presented at the local Chapter of Sigma Xi meeting. Dr. Kallam attended and presented at 'Project NOVA Leadership Forum', College Park, MD. December All stayed home grading student finals and projects and presenting to the family members at Christmas dinner tables. |
