I enrolled at Fort Hays State University, planning to be an English teacher and wrestling coach. Six years and six majors later, I earned bachelor degrees of Business Administration in Marketing, and Management. At FHSU, I was able to quickly become involved in student organizations, which allowed me to meet many people and gain valuable experience in working within business organizations. Group projects and presentations within the marketing and management curriculums again allowed me to further develop my communication and leadership skills. Being a resident assistant and program director in the residence halls provided me with great opportunities to apply my marketing and management skills in real world applications as I learned them.

Generally speaking, getting a college degree helped me learn to manage and prioritize multiple demands on my time and broadened my perspective (yes, there is value in those general education classes outside your major!).
More specific to my career, Business Communications and my teaching methods classes helped me develop skills (in particular, verbal and written communication skills) that I have used every day in my 20 years since college. Also having a broad understanding of business (accounting, marketing, management, etc.) has been very beneficial as I have worked on projects and interacted with others across Koch companies.

I arrived at FHSU in Jan 1970, a New York kid looking for a new home. I was there about a week when I knew I had found it. Being an East coast guy it took awhile getting used to the slower pace, but it was not too long when I began to feel like I really belonged in Kansas. One of the most important things I enjoyed about Fort Hays was the personal touch.
