Academic Advising Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I am not sure what courses I need to take. How do I find out?
A. It is important for you to make informed course selection decisions. If you do not have a recent copy of your degree summary sheet, please fill out the contact form to request one. Please allow time for your advisor to request your information from the Registrar’s Office.
Q. What is a degree summary sheet?
When you select the Bachelor of Business Administration- Management as your degree, you will receive an excel document that outlines the courses you need to take. Transfer students and non-transfer students receive different summaries. This is an internal, informal document used to help you track your coursework. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure its accuracy and update it as needed.
Q. When I add up the hours on my degree sheet, it does not total the 124 hours needed for my degree. Why?
A. You degree summary sheet does not track your general electives. It is the student’s responsibility to know which courses taken (or transferred in) count towards general electives. Transfer students and non-transfer students have different general elective requirements.
Q. I can’t get in a class I need. Can I call the Coordinator of Virtual Advising to request to get in a closed class?
A. The Coordinator of Virtual Advising does not have access to open classes that have already been closed because of reaching their enrollment limit. FHSU and the individual departments set these limits for students to get maximized attention from the instructor. You will need to petition the individual instructor.
Q. I want to enroll, but all the courses I need are already closed. What do I do?
A. Pre-enrollment begins much earlier than classes begin (e.g. Pre-enrollment for fall courses begins in March). If you wait until the last minute, you may not get in the courses you need or prefer. The longer you wait to enroll, the fewer options you will have. Your options:
- You may need to take some courses that are not your first choice.
- Students are constantly adding and dropping courses. Be persistent and regularly check TigerEnroll to see if classes open.
- There is a deadline prior to classes beginning
to pay for classes. If students do not pay by the deadline,
they are automatically unenrolled from the course. For
example, if the payment deadline is August 8, courses will
open on August 9.
Please plan ahead: work with your advisor in advance to determine your course plan for the following semester to avoid last minute course planning. View the academic calendar to determine these dates.
Q. Do I need to use my scatcat FHSU-assigned email address?
A. YES! You are responsible for the information sent to your scatcat email address. Please check it often. Another option is to have email that is sent to your Scatcat account forwarded to another email address (such as Hotmail or Yahoo). To link your Scatcat email address with another provider, point your web browser to http://www.fhsu.edu/ctc/helpdesk/forwardscatcat.shtml and follow the instructions.
