FAQs

Do I have to come to campus?
FHSU offers both on-campus and on-line MBA options. A student may earn the core degree and most concentrations fully on-line without having to visit campus.

Who are the faculty?
The same full-time Ph.D. faculty teach the core on-campus and on-line sections. A mixture of academically and professionally qualified faculty teach the concentrations.

Will I get to know my faculty and fellow students?
Whether on-campus or on-line, you will get to know your professors and your colleagues. You will become part of the FHSU MBA Network!

Are there scholarships or fellowships?
On-campus students are eligible for several Graduate Teaching Assistant or Graduate Assistant positions. Among the most exciting are the China GTA Fellowships in which MBA students assist on campus one year and immerse themselves in an undergraduate level class. In the second year, the GTA teaches American business classes at a FHSU partner university in China while completing final MBA classes. All tuition, academic fees, housing and travel to China are paid for in this full immersion program.

How do on-line classes work?
Faculty use a variety of “best practices” tools including the Blackboard 9.0 learning platform. Students are provided syllabi, assignments, lectures, simulations, and even collaboration tools. Most classes do not require students to be on-line at certain times, but provide assignment deadlines.

What is the cost of the MBA?
Tuition for students taking online MBA-prefix courses is $400.00 per credit hour.

For the on-campus MBA program, tuition for Kansas residents is $173.95 per credit hour. Tuition for contiguous state residents ( i.e., for students residing in Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, or Oklahoma) is $247.30 per credit hour. Tuition for non-Kansas residents is $408.65 per credit hour. Tuition for the on-line specialization courses is $225.00 per credit hour.

Future tuition rates and fees are subject to change at any time. A listing of all current graduate tuition and fees can be found at: http://www.fhsu.edu/sfs/tf/index.shtml.

Students who take both on-campus and online MBA courses during the same semester will be charged the appropriate tuition and fees depending on the type of course selected.

Are there additional costs for the MBA?
Yes. Students will need to purchase course textbooks and related materials (if any) required by instructors.

Can I complete the MBA degree completely online?
Yes. Depending upon your specialization, the MBA can be completed online, on campus, or a combination of both. All online graduates of the MBA program will be awarded the same degree as students who complete the on-campus MBA.

Can I complete the MBA degree completely on campus?
Yes. With the exception of MBA 800 CA: MBA Success Lab course, all core courses of our MBA prgram are available for face-to-face instruction on campus. Currently, the MBA specialization areas of Accounting and Finance are available only on campus.

How are MBA courses delivered?
Specific course delivery may vary, but most MBA classes will use a combination of interactive learning techniques (including instructional CDs/DVDs, streaming video, chat rooms, discussion boards, teleconferencing, etc.) supported by the leading online educational delivery system worldwide (i.e., Blackboard).

Do I need to take the GMAT before entering the MBA program?
Yes. The Graduate Management Admissions Test is a computerized multiple-choice and essay exam that is a prerequisite for entry to top-rated MBA programs. The test is designed to measure basic mathematical, verbal, and analytical reasoning skills.

Submission of a GMAT score is required for the MBA program. Under no conditions can the GMAT be waived.

Why do we require the GMAT?
We use your GMAT score as one piece of evidence of your current ability to deal with the courses and concepts in our program.

Studies by the Graduate Management Admission Council have found that the combination of GMAT score and GPA most accurately predicts the future success of MBA students.

When undergraduate grades are used alone, they are not very good predictors of MBA success. But, when GMAT scores are included in the evaluation process, the predictive ability almost doubles.

Where can I take the GMAT?
The GMAT CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) is offered six days a week, three weeks each month and is administered by Sylvan Learning & Technology Centers throughout the U.S. Special arrangements for taking the GMAT and payment of the registration fees are made directly with ETS Organization.

What business foundation courses are required for the MBA?
Three foundation courses are required for all MBA students who did not earn a business undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited four-year university before proceeding with the 34-hour MBA degree program.

  • GBUS 801: Survey of Economics for MBAs (3 hours)
  • GBUS 802: Management and Marketing Concepts for MBAs (3 hours)
  • GBUS 803: Accounting Theories and Practice for MBAs (3 hours)
  • GBUS 804: Financial and Quantitative Methods for MBAs (3 hours)

Students wishing for substitutions or exemptions for the foundation courses must submit their requests through the Graduate Coordinator to the MBA Committee for evaluation and approval.

All foundation courses are available for completion in one semester so non-business students are prepared to move into the MBA program quickly.

Can any undergraduate business courses be substituted for the three foundation courses?
Yes. Students can also substitute the business administration minor comprised of the following seven undergraduate courses (available both on-campus and online at Fort Hays State University) for the three MBA foundation courses:

  • ECFI305 (Managerial Finance)
  • ECFI321 (Quantitative Methods or Statistics)

  • ACCT204 (Managerial Accounting)

MBA classes will be taught in fall, spring and summer semesters, matching the scheduling of classes for on-campus delivery at Fort Hays State University.
