Program Description

Transcript notation for students completing this concentration will be "Liberal Studies (Assistive Technology)." The Department of Communication Disorders and the Department of Special Education at FHSU in cooperation with Research Institute for Assistive and Training Technologies at the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (RIATT@NASDSE) are proud to offer 20 different one-hour assistive technology courses provided through the Virtual College at Fort Hays State University.

RIATT@NASDSE courses can be used as a part of a Master's of Liberal Studies degree with an emphasis in Assistive Technology.

The Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) is a unique interdisciplinary graduate program available through the College of Arts and Sciences at Fort Hays State University. This MLS program involves:

  • 10-hour core requirement

  • 18-hour customized plan of study in assistive technology or related areas

  • 3-hour culminating experience for a total of 31 credit hours.

  • To learn more about this program visit our MLS site

  • Participants buy a multimedia learning kit for each course and work independently with communications through electronic mail.

  • Courses last four weeks and can be taken individually or as a part of a sequence.


  • The Department of Communication Disorders offers the following courses which will also be used in combination with the RIATT@NASDSE courses:

  • SLP 835 Augmentative and Alternative Communication (Graduate, 2 credit hours)

  • SLP 665 Communication and Aging (Graduate, 2 credit hours)

  • Both of these courses are web-based courses offered through the Virtual College at FHSU.

  • The Department of Special Education offers a variety of courses that are appropriate to supplement the MLS with an emphasis in Assistive Technology. However, at this time these are ITV courses and special arrangements would need to be made for participants outside of Kansas. For information on enrollment procedures and tuition and fees, please go to the Fort Hays State University Virtual College Web site. The courses listed below are taught on the same schedule as RIATT@NASDSE which is a site out of New Mexico that offers Distance Education Professional Development Classes.
