Concentration
in English
Program Description
The English Department participates in the MLS degree
program, in which a student completes at least eighteen hours in
English. Most students in this program also elect to do their culminating
experience in English as an independent project, which allows them
to explore some literary, drama, or pedagogical subject of interest
in depth. Many students who pursue this degree need at least eighteen
hours in English, so they can teach courses in the discipline in
community colleges.
In May 2001, the first three students completed the
requirements for the degree and graduated. In Spring 2004,
20 students in this concentration were enrolled in classes. The
MLS degree, with a concentration in English, is a
popular
concentration for distance learners. The program is available
to the distance education student.
Admittance Requirements
Most students in the MLS concentration in English
have a BA in English. However, if an applicant has at least twelve
hours in English or English-related courses (not counting basic
composition courses), and the applicant meets the admittance requirements
of the MLS program, then the applicant is likely to be admitted.
