Program Description

Mission: Creating individuals with the skills, knowledge, and creativity to succeed in the 21st century!

Fort Hays State University (FHSU) is pleased to offer the Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) with a concentration in Information Assurance. This concentration includes developing a mastery of information practices, network security software and hardware applications, and of operating systems. This academic program is aligned with the NSA 4011 and NSA 4013 curiculum standards. The Information Assurance concentration is offered through the Department of Information Networking and Telecommunications. All required courses are offered through distance education and do not require campus visits. Students completing their MLS program in this concentration will have the following notation on their transcripts: "Liberal Studies (Information Networking and Telecommunications)"

The Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) program is a 31-hour interdisciplinary graduate program. Courses can be taken on campus or online. The MLS consists of a 10-hour core, an 18-hour customized plan of study, and a three-hour culminating experience.

Admittance Requirements

The MLS concentration in Information Assurance generally requires an MLS applicant to have a minimum GPA of 3.0. However, recent grades and professional accomplishments will be considered.

Program Curriculum

The core is built around the theme "Ways of Knowing: A Foundation for Understanding and Exploring the Emerging Knowledge Society." This theme is explored in the following on-line courses, which comprise the 10-hour core:

  • IDS 801 Introduction to Graduate Liberal Studies (1 hour) (Spring, Summer, Fall)
  • IDS 802 Ways of Knowing in Comparative Perspective (3 hours) (Spring, Summer, Fall)
  • IDS 803 Origins and Implications of the Knowledge Society (3 hours) (Spring, Summer, Fall)
  • IDS 804/IDS 880 Information Literacy (3 hours) (Spring, Summer, Fall)

Courses in the 18-hour portion of the MLS concentration in Information Assurance

Undergraduate Leveling

The Information Assurance concentration assumes a fundamental expertise in network design and implimentation. Students who do not have this expertise may develop it by taking non-graduate leveling courses in Internetworking:

  • INT 291 Internetworking I* (Fall, Spring, and Summer)
  • INT 292 Internetworking II* (Fall, Spring, and Summer)
  • INT 293 Internetworking III* (Fall, Spring, and Summer)

Information Assurance - required courses

In addition to the four required courses listed below, students will need to take a minimum of three additional electives. These may be taken on-line or on campus.

  • INT 684 Foundations of Information Systems Security (Fall virtual only; CISSP overview)
  • INT 685 Fundamentals of Network Security (Fall virtual only)
  • INT 686 Intermediate Network Security Firewalls (Spring virtual only)
  • INT 891 Capstone in Network Security# ( Spring virtual only)

    Information Assurance electives (need three electives)

  • CCI 663 Introduction to Cryptography (Spring on campus only)
  • INT 622 Modern Telephony (Fall virtual only)
  • INT 654 Introduction to Web-Enabled Databases: Oracle (Fall virtual and on campus)

    Cisco Certified Network Professional Courses

  • INT 695 Advanced Routing (Fall)**
  • INT 696 Securing Converged LANS (Spring)**
  • INT 697 Advanced LAN Switching (Fall)**
  • INT 698 Optimizing Converged Networks (Spring)**

*Internetworking I, II, and III are the courses providing peparation for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification exam.

**Advanced Routing, Securing Converged LANS, Advanced LAN Switching, and Optimizing Converged Networks are the courses providing preparation for Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) exam. To take these courses a student must have completed INT 291, INT 292, and INT 293 or passed the CCNA examination.

#INT 891 typically serves as the culminating course for the masters degree. Students are urged to contact Dr. Keyu Jiang (kjiang@fhsu.edu) to discuss potential culminating projects in advance of enrolling in the class. Students intending to pursue a doctorate degree may want to complete a thesis for their culminating experience.

The number of on-line course offerings will grow to fit industry and student needs. Each of the distance learning courses is offered fully on-line and does not require a physical presence on campus. Most of the course activities are completed when the student chooses to study and work on academic projects. Each of the courses will have specific deadlines for projects, labs, tests and other activities. Students taking on-line courses will benefit substantially from having high-speed Internet access such as: DSL, Cable, or Ethernet. Additional course offerings are available on campus.
