"I wish I could find a program that I could complete during my free time."                    "I want a graduate education that I can readily apply to my workplace."                    "I want to enjoy my next degree and not feel pressured to compete with other students."                    "I don't have time to come to campus every week for classes, so my classes have to be designed for the distance learner."

On May 21 - 23, 2003 FHSU hosted a site visit coordinated for full membership to the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs. We were proud to have Dr. Trent Gabert, Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Studies at the University of Oklahoma visiting our campus! Dr. Gabert submitted his report in June. In November of 2003 the Association decided to accept FHSU for full membership. Congratulations!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FHSU has posted the largest ever enrollment (undergraduate and graduate) in Fall 2005! Twentieth day enrollment figures show that 378 MLS students were enrolled at FHSU that semester. Thanks to all of you for considering FHSU. The beginning of our second 100 years is off to a FANTASTIC start!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The effort to create a handbook for MLS students has resulted in a handbook posted on the web. MLS students and other interested persons are invited to go online and carefully read The MLS Student Handbook. Please send comments and suggestions to Art Morin, the Director of the MLS Program.

Below is a list of the notations that that can appear on the MLS student's official transcript (but each student can list only one!). You also have the option of not listing any concentration. Please contact your advisor or the Graduate School for more information.

In an MLS assessment, over 80% of the students completing the MLS (or nearing completion) agreed or strongly agreed that they would do it again due to the intense learning opportunity presented and the quality of instruction. A second assessment began in Spring 2004.

Way to go!

IMPORTANT - The final submit date for Fall applications for Graduate Teaching Assistantships may be the first part of the previous March (that is, applications for Fall 2006 GTA awards should be submitted no later than the first part of March 2006). Please contact the Graduate School for the application form.

The MLS program was awarded two two full time assistantships in Fall 2005. Tthe MLS program may split the assistantships into semester awards, and even sometimes, into 1/2 time assistantships in an effort to reach as many people as possible. In the past, on-campus students have been given priority. Apply early!

UPDATE ON CONCENTRATIONS!

Look for information about the concentrations in Communication to be posted on the web.

If you have any questions about any of the concentrations, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Morin (amorin@fhsu.edu).

POLICY CLARIFICATION - The Graduate School has announced a change in how enrollments will be processed in the future. This new policy states that the Graduate School will enforce a one (1) semester limit on enrollment for students who have not completed the graduate application process. The application process includes:

  • completion of a graduate application,
  • submission of a transcript that indicates the receipt of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution,
  • evidence that a 2.50 or higher grade point average was earned on the last 60 undergraduate hours completed (this information should be on the transcript).
  • Students will be allowed to continue in the first semester in which they enrolled, but must complete the application process during that semester.
  • Failure to complete the application process will result in a "hold" being placed on a student's record, which will exclude that student from future enrollment until the application process is completed.
  • Once the application process is completed and the student has been accepted into the Graduate School, the hold will be released from the student's record.

If you wish to apply for admittance to the MLS program, you need to have two letters of recommendation sent in your behalf and you need to complete a Personal Statement. All transcripts must be sent from the school directly to the Graduate School, unless you are applying for a non-degree status - in which case the transcripts (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate) can be copies sent from the student to the Graduate School.

Once you have been admitted to the MLS program, please follow the MLS Checklist..
