Admission Process

          "I wish I could find a program that I could complete during my free time."                    "I want a graduate education that I can readily apply to my workplace."                    "I want to enjoy my next degree and not feel pressured to compete with other students."                    "I don't have time to come to campus every week for classes, so my classes have to be designed for the distance learner."

Prior to Admission

To begin the process of becoming part of the Master of Liberal Studies degree program a potential student would need to complete the following steps.

  1. Complete the Interest Inventory. The Interest Inventory is a short assessment of your interests in terms of our customized areas of study.
  2. Once you have completed the Interest Inventory you'll be contacted by the Master of Liberal Studies Director and, quite possibly, a graduate advisor from the departments in which you indicated an interest.
  3. The next step, once you've decided to make the commitment, is to complete an Application for Graduate Admission, considered next in the Admission Process.

Admission Process

Domestic students interested in pursuing a Master of Liberal Studies degree at Fort Hays State University should refer to the Graduate School web pages entitled Degree-Seeking Applicants. All degree-seeking applicants must:

  1. Submit a formal application for admission, which can be accessed through the Forms and Application website;
  2. Submit an official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate course work using our Transcript Request Form, which can be accessed through the Admission Process webpage;
  3. Submit Letters of Recommendation;
  4. Submit the application fee (beginning January 1, 2007 the application fee will be $35 for domestic students and $35 for foreign students);
  5. Submit a personal statement if required by the department by downloading the form, which can be accessed through the Forms and Application website.

When all materials are submitted for the MLS degree, the Graduate School will forward the materials to Dr. Morin. After he has determined the appropriate area of concentration, your application will be forwarded to the MLS graduate advisor for that department for consideration and recommendation. Following receipt of the departmental recommendation, Dr. Morin will assign an advisor and forward the application back to the Graduate School. Finally, the Graduate School will complete its evaluation and notify the applicant of the action taken and the admission status.

After Being Admitted

Once you have been notified that you have been admitted to the Graduate School (in the MLS program) and have been assigned an advisor, you'll want to contact that advisor to coordinate a class schedule. Make sure and do this early enough before classes start so that the courses for your program do not close. Also, after you have been admitted to this concentration, please follow the MLS Checklist and carefully read The MLS Student Handbook.

Please see the Graduate School policies regarding your ability to enroll in classes before you are considered for admission.
