Placement Exams

Transfer students may take exams to proficiency out of Music Theory, Aural Skills, and Group Piano. Specific questions about the placement process for any of the courses listed below may be directed to Dr. Ofcarcik at jjofcarcik@fhsu.edu.

Music Theory Placement

Information on music theory placement exams is found here.

Aural Skills Placement

Students who receive a passing grade (P or HP) on a theory placement exam will be given the corresponding aural skills exam, including both singing and dictation. Specific information about this exam will be provided to qualifying students when they are notified of their passing theory score.

Group Piano Placement

Students wishing to place out of piano will need to demonstrate the following skills in an individual interview scheduled during the first week of class. Students are responsible for contacting Dr. Ofcarcik (jjofcarcik@fhsu.edu) to schedule this interview. If students do not schedule an interview they will be expected to register for Group Piano I and complete the entire sequence.

In the interview, students will be asked to demonstrate the following skills in order to place out of the course:

Group Piano I

All major scales: 2 octaves, hands together, steady tempo, correct notes and fingerings

"Allegretto," found on p. 202 of Alfred's Group Piano for Adults, Book 1

Group Piano II

All minor scales: 2 octaves, hands together, steady tempo, correct notes and fingerings

"Prelude No. 1," found on p. 346 of Alfred's Group Piano for Adults, Book 1
Sight reading
Melody harmonization

Group Piano III & IV

Students who demonstrate the required skills for Group Piano I and II are eligible to schedule a separate interview with Dr. Irena Ravitskaya to determine whether they may proficiency out of Group Piano III and/or IV.
