Dr. Paula Boire, Professor of Voice, and winner of
the FHSU Distinguished Scholar Award in 2003 for her books A
Comprehensive Study of Romanian Art Song, Vols.1-4, published
by The Edwin Mellen Press, has performed as a soloist with the Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, regional
American orchestras and concertized in Europe and the United States,
having sung over 200 performances in oratorio, opera, operetta,
musical theatre and recitals. As a founding member of the Clarivoce
Ensemble, a group dedicated to the performance of works for clarinet,
soprano and piano, she has performed in Kansas, Texas, Iowa, Missouri,
Michigan and Nebraska.
In March 2005, she was a guest of honor at the Central
College Romanian Music Festival where she participated in television
interviews presented in Iowa and Romania, celebrating the opening
of the Romanian Music Library Collection at Central College. In
October 2004 she presented papers on the songs of George Enescu
at the International George Enescu Festivals in Dorobanti and Liveni,
Romania. In March 2003, she was honored at Central College in Pella,
Iowa at a Romanian Music Festival for her book and invited to present
a paper at the first Symposium and Vocal Competition for the Interpretation
of Romanian Art Song in Brasov, Romania, which was televised in
Romania. She was subsequently invited to present a paper on the
songs of George Enescu at the International George Enescu Festival
and Symposium in Bucharest, Romania, in September 2003.
Dr. Boire has completed four volumes of Romanian
Art Songs, (Vol. I for Soprano, Vol. II for Mezzo-Soprano,
Vol. III for Tenor and Vol. IV for Bass-Baritone) published by Leyerle
Publications. She has premiered much of this vocal literature in
the States in lecture-recitals on college campuses and as part of
community concert series. In the past several years, she has presented
lecture-recitals on Romanian art song at UC Santa Barbara, Cleveland
State University, Ohio State University, The University of Oklahoma,
the University of New Mexico, the Salina Kansas Art Center and at
the West-Central NATS convention. Other similar presentations include
a lecture-recital on the national CMS convention in Denver, the
Great Plain regional CMS convention in Kansas City, a poster paper
presentation at the national NATS convention in 2000 and lecture-recitals
in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. In addition
to her FHSU teaching (studio and class voice, diction, vocal pedagogy),
Dr. Boire maintains an active performance and adjudication schedule
and private voice studios in Hays and Russell .
She has taught at the University of Iowa, Middle Tennessee
State University and Lenoir-Rhyne College. Her voice teachers include
Irmgard Seefried, Rita Streich, Yolanda Marculescu, Elizabeth Mosher,
Virginia Babikian, Helen Hodam, Dr. Joseph Figg and Shirlee Emmons.
Dr. Boire is a graduate of the University of Arizona (A. Mus.D.
voice performance major and musicology minor), the Hochschule für
Musik und darstellende Kunst (Lied and Oratorio), the University
of Houston, (M.M.), Oberlin Conservatory of Music (B.M.) and the
prep division of the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto, Ontario).
She has been awarded four Fulbright grants for projects in Romania
and Austria.
