Sample reviews of compositions and teaching:
Clearly, the highlight of the evening was A
River From the Walls. This work for flute and tape by Linda
Antas creates a powerful aura of engulfing mystery, and features
a tape of outstanding aural dimensions that can easily stand alone
as a listening experience.
[Still, Yet, Again is] a highly evocative and absorbing
work, at times dark and moody, at others fiercely aggressive but
always interesting. It was...able to flow effortlessly between the
speakers to fill the hall with its drones and its crashings, or
drift softly around the audience. 8-and-a-half minutes of this just
wasn't enough!
This work [Sueño Sin Palabras] traversed between
the rhythmic impulses of speech and the intuitive navigation of
places and spaces without words in dreams. This central idea played
itself out in the music through sustained shifting drones (timbraly
developed with the use of 1/4 tones), and organically growing rhythmically
driving sections. The string quartet writing was very effective
as a sound source outside of its traditional melodic (thematic)
context...this commission was well placed!
Dr. Antas knows her material and loves it. She is a very enthusiastic
teacher and is willing to work with students one on one.
Very positive atmosphere in class...One of the best teachers I’ve
had.
Great innovative teaching. Great knowledge of material and ability
to relay it to the class.
[The class] absolutely changed the way I thought about music.
She understands people learn differently and cares about helping
the students.
[Dr. Antas is] very good at encouraging student participation.
I really enjoyed learning about music technology in this class.
It was interesting to use it as a medium for composition and I felt
the instructor taught me how to do so in a way I understood—especially
because I am not gifted in using technology. The instructor was
always willing to make time to hear our concerns or give feedback
of a project, which was always very helpful and insightful.
I thought the tricks and skills on learning how to solfege were
great and were taught in a positive and reinforcing manner. I can
say with confidence that my solfege skills have improved greatly.
[The instructor is] good at giving alternate solutions when students
didn’t understand.
I adore how Dr. Antas is a funny and very reasonable person. I felt
that I learned a lot for her in this class, and I enjoyed it. |
