Tips in
Teaching the Nurse Practitioner Student
- Allow the student opportunity for “hands on” experiences. Assist
and guide the student with new learning experiences.
- Encourage the student to be an active learner. Allow the student
to participate in critical thinking and to make decisions. Ask
the student how they derived the diagnosis and management plan.
Provide the student with the rationale for the diagnosis and plan
that you made in the clinical situation.
- Recognize that the novice practitioner will take longer to
perform assessments and in formulating diagnosis and management
plans. Assist the student to develop a systematic approach in
obtaining the health history and physical exam.
- As the student’s skill level increases, increase the responsibility
in decision-making in clinical situations. Gradually allow the
student to adopt the role of the nurse practitioner in the clinical
situation.
- Provide regular feedback to the FNP student on their clinical
performance. Advise the student of their strengths and the areas
in need of improvement in their clinical skills. Share resources
with the student that can be helpful in improving performance.
- Periodically evaluate the learning experience with the FNP
student. Clarify with the student if the clinical situation is
meeting the student’s learning objectives. Ask the student if
there are other situations available in the clinic setting that
would be helpful in attainment of their learning goals.
- As the student’s clinical skills increase, encourage the student
to decide on a pharmacological management plan, as appropriate
to the situation. Assist the student to prescribe the correct
drug and dosage. Allow the student to call the pharmacy to fill
the prescription or write the prescription, depending on the clinical
situation.
- As the clinical situation permits, encourage the student to
dictate or document in the medical record. Offer suggestions to
insure concise, legally sound documentation.
- Assist the novice practitioner to work in a collegial manner.
Assist the student to develop skills that foster interdisciplinary
relationships that enhance collaboration with other health professionals.
