5. Are there any scholarships I can apply for?

Click on Scholarships on the main screen and information on university and departmental scholarships is provided. Complete scholarship application online. Once completed you need not fill out other scholarship forms for FHSU.

Is there a separate admission form to be submitted prior to being admitted as a nursing student in the Department of Nursing?

Yes! You must first be admitted to the university. You must complete that enrollment first. Later when you have met the pre-requisites for the nursing major, you will complete an admission form for the Department of Nursing.

6. Is there a nursing student organization?

There are several nursing student organizations. For more information click on Nursing Organizations on the main screen.

Nurses Christian Fellowship offers spiritual support to students and faculty.

Fort Hays Association of Nursing Students (FHANS) is a pre-professional organization for those students interested in a career in nursing.

Fort Hays Graduate Nurse Association (FHGNA) is a graduate student organization for those students enrolled in the nursing graduate program.

Nu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) is a professional nursing honor society. The chapter selects members each year for recognition in this nursing honor society based on specific criteria.

7. Should I be a certified nurse’s aide now?

Prior to being admitted to the nursing program, you will need to be certified as a nurse’s aide (CNA) or take our two credit hour course to earn your CNA. It is wise to consider earning your certificate and keeping it current until you enter the nursing program. Hospitals across the nation are starting to pay new nurse graduates additional money to start work as a graduate nurse if they have a baccalaureate degree and if they have work experience as a nurse aide. Contact your local community college or nursing home to find out the closest school offering this course.

8. Can I transfer in courses from another school?

Generally, yes you can transfer in courses for credit to FHSU but a word of caution. PRIOR to your enrolling in any college level course, contact the Registrar at FHSU to determine if your courses will transfer. This will save you time and money if the course does not transfer!

11. What type of computer do I need?

Each year the nursing department updates the criteria for the type of computer hardware and software are most beneficial to students in the Department of Nursing. Contact the Department of Nursing for more information at 1-785-628-4000.

12. How long will it take to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)?

For most students it takes four years of full time study. Many students elect to take some summer courses to decrease the number of credit hours they have to take in the fall and spring semesters.

13. When should I apply for scholarships?

The first deadline is December 15th each year and the last deadline to submit an application online is February 15th. Scholarship award letters are generally sent to students in early May.

14. When should I apply for financial aid?

In January of each year, you can obtain the financial aid forms from the Financial Aid Office and those forms should be completed as soon as possible each year.

15. When should I enroll for next semester?

Enrollment dates vary with each semester so contacting the Registrar is one way to verify dates of enrollment and visiting the FHSU homepage is another.

16. What is the Nightingale Experience for high school students?

Each February sophomore and junior high school students wanting to learn more about a career in nursing can contact the Department of Nursing for an application to attend the two day event called the Nightingale Experience. For more information go to the main menu and click on the “Nightingale Experience” logo found in the bottom left corner of the web page.

17. When do I begin taking nursing courses?

You can start nursing courses in your freshman year and take several more in your sophomore year prior to starting in the nursing program.

18. Can you specialize in one area like OB or ER in your nursing program?

In any nursing program, you are prepared as a nurse generalist. You study many areas of nursing and specialization begins in graduate nursing school or with on the job training after graduation.
