1. What are the qualifications for a registered nurse (RN) student in the Undergraduate Nursing Studies Outreach Delivery?

All RNs who are licensed in the United States of America can
complete a BSN through the Outreach Delivery offered via the internet.

2. Does a RN need to come to the Fort Hays State University campus for courses?

This program is delivered through the Virtual College. A student does not have to come to Hays, KS to take courses.

3. How does a RN get started in the program?

Contact the Coordinator of Baccalaureate Outreach Delivery (CBOD) at
kkells@fhsu.edu Send official transcripts directly from the colleges/universities that you have attended to the CBOD.

4. Do older courses that were taken previously count towards a BSN?

Courses have no expiration date at Fort Hays State University (FHSU).

5. How does a bachelor’s degree in another field aid in the pursuit of a BSN?

All general education courses are eliminated from the Plan of Study. However, a bachelor’s degree in another field does not eliminate the pre-nursing courses such as psychology, sociology, anatomy/physiology, etc.

6. What is the difference between admission to the university and admission to the Department of Nursing?

Admission to the university automatically occurs when you enroll in the first course at FHSU. Admission to the Department of Nursing occurs after a student has completed all the admission criteria.

7. What are the Admission Criteria for the Department of Nursing?

Admission criteria:
a. all pre-nursing requirements must be completed prior to admission;
b. complete and submit Department of Nursing (DON) undergraduate application form;
c. three references concerning personal characteristics of applicant;
d. cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50 on a 4.00 scale;
e. a grade of C or above in the required prerequisite courses;
f. all official transcripts are on file in the Registrar’s Office and the
DON;
g. current RN licensure number and expiration date must be filed with the Coordinator of Baccalaureate Outreach Delivery (CBOD).

The required nursing prerequisites are:

9. What Grade-Point-Average is expected for this degree?

Throughout the nursing program, a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50 must be maintained. All nursing courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.

10. What type of computer do I need to complete this degree?

The Virtual College provides the following guidelines. However, they can be updated at any time. The minimum requirement is:

200 MHz Pentium Processor
PowerPC 120 Mhz
64 MB of RAM
50 MB of free hard drive space
Sound card and speakers
Sound card and speakers
4X CD-ROM drive
28.8 K modem (or higher)

Internet access and an e-mail account
Web browser and certain plug-ins (depending on the course)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 95 or higher

The Department of Nursing uses all Microsoft Office software. You will
be required to use Microsoft Word for word processing.

11. What credit will be given to RNs for former nursing course work?

Students who request and qualify for Advanced Standing will be granted a total of 33 nursing hours of Advanced Standing. These courses cover content such as medical, surgical, pediatrics, obstetrics, etc.

12. How will an associates degree help with earning a BSN from FHSU?

Any student who has an associates degree from a private or community college can qualify for a Transfer Articulation (TA) plan of study. The general education course requirement on a TA requires less credit hours.

13. Who will advise RNs?

The Coordinator of Baccalaureate Outreach Delivery will act as a RN’s advisor until a tentative Plan of Study has been developed. At this time a RN will be assigned a nursing faculty member as an advisor.

15. How long will a RN be in school to complete a BSN?

This is totally dependent on the RN. Student may take up to 18 hours of credit per semester or as little as 1 hour.
