Augmentin BID

Name Augmentin BID (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid)
Classification Aminocillin with beta-lactamase inhibitor
AOM Dosage 45 mg/kg/day of amoxicillin component in two divided doses. Some authors recommend doubling the amoxicillin dose (80 - 90 mg/kg/d) when concerned about resistant S. pneumoniae. Expect to see a new Augmentin formualtion with a 14:1 amoxicillin to clavulanate ratio versus the current 7:1 preparation.
Preparations 200 and 400 mg/5 cc
Chewable tablets = 200 and 400 mg
Capsules = 500 and 875 mg capsules

Relative Cost Expensive
Side Effects Relatively uncommon, < 10% diarrhea

Don't confuse the BID Augmentin preparation with the older TID (higher concentration of clavulanate) preparations. The thrust of the new formulation was to make a BID preparation without the GI side effects. Clinically, the new formulation appears to work.
