H1N1 Information for Parents
August 20, 2009

Dear parents and family members of Fort Hays State University students:

We look forward to welcoming your student to campus for the 2009-10 academic year. As you may know, there has been a lot of discussion about how to respond to the H1N1 flu this fall, which was originally called the swine flu. The Division of Student Affairs is working to develop and refine plans for our campus in response to the H1N1 flu. Our Student Health Center is preparing to do what is necessary to keep our students well.

For the 2009-10 academic year:

Encourage students to visit the Student Health Center (located in the lower level of Memorial Union) if they have questions or concerns about illness, medications, etc. Hours for Student Health are: 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. (Monday-Thursday) and 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. (Friday).

1) If diagnosed with influenza-like symptoms or H1N1, your student should not attend class. Students who have flu-like symptoms should refrain from participating in campus activities. An influenza-like illness is defined as a combination of fever with either cough or sore throat; it may also involve extreme fatigue and body aches.

2) Plan for possible illness. We encourage parents and family members to discuss with your student how your family could respond if your student becomes ill with influenza-like illness. For most students, the best place to recuperate will be at home with parents and family.

• If your student has a roommate, an isolation room in the University Residence Halls has been designated as a place your student could wait until you arrive, to minimize contact with his/her roommate.
• If your student has a single room, he or she can wait there until you arrive.

3) We understand that it may not be possible for all students to go home. We continue to develop plans for students who will be unable to leave campus to recuperate from illness.

4) We recommend that students wash their hands often and have hand sanitizer and a thermometer.

5) For additional information, we encourage you to review the Center for Disease Control Web site at http://www.cdc.gov/, and also our university student health Web site at http://www.fhsu.edu/studenthealth/. We will continue to update the site as is necessary.

We appreciate your support of our campus plans, and cooperation with community health protocols being followed by Fort Hays State University. We wish your student much success in the coming academic year.

Sincerely,

Division of Student Affairs
Fort Hays State University
