Undergraduate Programs in Philosophy

Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy
The Philosophy major gives you the deepest understanding of the history and complexities of human thought. Diverse perspectives spark lively debates on topics from the nature of reality to embryonic research. Many students use a philosophy major as a starting point for law school or as a complement to studies in education, medicine, or other forms of public service.

Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Pre-Theology emphasis
If you are considering further study at a theological school or seminary, the Pre-Theological program offers the preparation you need. Specifically tailored to meet the recommendations of the American Association of Theological Schools, this four-year program combines religion and philosophy classes, providing you with a broad knowledge base to build on with further study.

Minor in Philosophy
A minor allows you to perfect the skills of critical thinking and argument analysis while maintaining your degree focus. You will take twenty credit hours of philosophy classes. You must also satisfy the requirements for two of the certificates offered by our department.

Certificate Programs in Philosophy
If philosophy intrigues you, but you are limited by the requirements of your primary degree program, our certificate program allows you to broaden your perspective without greatly increasing your time on campus. For example, you can sample philosophy classes while working toward the General Philosophy certificate, or complement a nursing or a political science degree with a certificate in Moral and Political Philosophy.

Certificates expand your studies beyond your major’s requirements, setting you apart from other students. To earn a certificate, you must complete three courses (nine credit hours) listed in that content area with a passing grade.

Learn more about the course requirements for each of the three certificates:

Students preparing for graduate study or careers in Religion and Theology are advised to satisfy the requirements for the certificate of emphasis in Philosophy of Religion.  If the student’s interests are in one of the Biblically based religions, they should take both courses in Biblical Studies.

Students preparing for graduate study in Law, Political Science, Medicine or other professional degree are advised to satisfy the requirements for the certificate of emphasis in Moral and Political Philosophy.  Students preparing for degrees in Health Care are advised to take IDS400: Bioethics in particular.

Students preparing for graduate study in Philosophy are advised to satisfy the requirements for a certificate of emphasis in General Philosophy.  Many of the standardized exams for graduate study like, the GRE and the LSAT, in general recommend the study of logic and philosophy to improve critical thinking skills.
