Requirements for the Minor in Philosophy
-- 20 hours of course work, including two certificates of emphasis.

Requirements for the Major in Philosophy
-- 30 hours of coursework, including
The 18-hour core:
      (1) PHIL 100 General Logic (3 hrs) OR PHIL 300 Modern Symbolic Logic (3 hrs)
      (2) PHIL 200 Philosophy of Knowledge (3 hrs)
      (3) PHIL 220 Classical Greek Philosophy (3 hrs)
      (4) PHIL 320 Foundations of Modern Philosophy (3 hrs)
      (5) PHIL 340 Introduction to Ethics (3 hrs)
      (6) PHIL 499 Senior Thesis (3 hrs)
     • At least one of the certificates other than GENERAL PHILOSOPHY:
     (Each certificate program = 9 credit hours. Some certificate programs include core
     courses.)
     • Additional Electives: Students choose additional courses to attain a total of 30 credit
      hours in philosophy. See the attached list for other courses.)

Certificates of Emphasis in Philosophy
- To earn a certificate in one of the following seven areas of emphasis the student must complete three of the courses listed in that area:

What Courses Should You Take?
Take whatever interests you most, but you might also consider the following advice:

Students preparing for graduate study in LAW are advised to satisfy the requirements for a certificate of emphasis in Philosophy of Public Life, and should take PHIL 100, General Logic, PHIL 340, Introduction to Ethics, and some of the introductory law classes offered through the Department of Political Science and Justice Studies.

Students preparing for graduate study in Medicine or in one of the other branches of Health Care are advised to satisfy the requirements for the certificate of emphasis in Bioethical Studies.

Students preparing to become primary or secondary school Teachers are advised to satisfy the requirements for the certificate of emphasis in Philosophy of Values.

Students preparing for graduate study or careers in Religion are advised to satisfy the requirements for the certificate of emphasis in Philosophy of Religion, and if the students' interests are in one of the Biblically based religions, also the certificate of emphasis in Biblical Studies.

Students preparing for graduate study in Philosophy are advised to satisfy the requirements for the certificate of emphasis in General Philosophy and certificate of emphasis in Logic and Epistemology. In addition the student should take PHIL 340, Introduction to Ethics.
