Dr. Miller is an assistant professor in the Department
of Philosophy. Remarkable scientific breakthroughs over
the past decade in genetic cloning and stem-cell research
offer extraordinary hope for the treatment of disease
and the regeneration of damaged tissues and organs. But
these potentially significant therapeutic benefits present
numerous ethical challenges, and raise the specter of
a haunting future in which people become dehumanized,
and society is divided into those who have been genetically
enhanced, and those who are genetically unmodified,
with disturbing consequences for our view of human equality. In
this talk, we will explore both the medical hopes and
the ethical and political risks associated with them.
