| Quick Tip: Compact Fluorescent Light
Bulbs You can save on your electricity bill by shutting off
lights when they are not being used.
Did you know you can also save while using lighting just by
changing the type of light bulb in your home?
Consider changing your incandescent light bulbs (standard
light bulb) with Compact Fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs use
75% less energy and produce less heat. Compact Fluorescent
bulbs can be purchased at most any store where light bulbs
are sold. They do cost more to purchase initially, but will
last 5 to 10 times longer. Start by changing FIVE bulbs used
the most in your household. As your other indoor bulbs burn
out, replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs. When you
replace 25% of the lights in high-use areas with fluorescent
bulbs, you can save around 40% of the lighting portion of
your electricity bill.
To replace your incandescent bulb with the equivalent light
level compact fluorescent (CF) bulb, look for bulbs 1/4 to
1/3 the wattage. The bulb package will usually tell you the
equivalent light replacement. You will replace a 100 watt
bulb with a 25 watt CF, a 75 watt bulb with a 20 watt CF,
a 60 watt bulb with a 15 watt CF, etc. Compact Fluorescent
bulbs are also sold with different life hours. Most are 6,000
to 10,000 life hours. Be sure to compare the price and get
the best buy.
