Assistant Professor of Communication Studies - Generalist Position

Appointment:

Tenure-track position with 9-month appointment.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctorate required in communication or communication related discipline with teaching experience desired. Qualified candidate should be able to teach graduate level coursework and be eligible for graduate faculty.
Candidate must provide evidence of commitment to excellence in teaching.   Interest/experience in teaching distance learning preferred.

 

 

Job Description:

Instruction-Demonstrated excellence in classroom instruction is imperative and an interest in distance learning and willingness to deliver distance learning courses are assets. 
Ability to teach one or more of the following graduate communication core classes is considered a positive factor:
Organizational Communication and Leadership
Introduction to Graduate Research
Contemporary Theories in Communication

Opportunities also exist to teach and/or develop courses within the departmental core and other communication topics. 

Candidate will advise program majors and show evidence of an active scholarly research agenda. Fort Hays State University faculty performs duties based on a 60% instruction, 20% scholarship and 20% service expectation. The candidate will teach 12 credit hours per semester. 

Summer teaching/assignments possible.
Scholarship-The successful candidate will exhibit an active scholarly agenda sufficient to gain tenure within the requisite time period and will continue to be an active scholar throughout his or her career. 
Service-The successful candidate will exhibit commitment to the university through committee and other service at the department, college and university level.  Service to the profession is expected as is service to the community.

Position Requirements:

Doctorate in communication or communication related discipline with teaching experience and demonstration of scholarship and service consistent with appointment rank.  Applicants who are ABD will be considered, with preference given for commitment to meeting tenure-line qualifications.

The Department of Communication Studies has approximately 125 majors and offers both bachelor and master degrees.  Undergraduate students receive a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with an emphasis in one of the following:  general communication, theatre, journalism, public relations or advertising.  Students may also receive teacher certification in speech/theatre or journalism.  Graduate students receive a Master of Science in Communication Studies and have the option of completing a thesis or a research project.  The department has a large contingency of international graduate students from China.

Hays has a population near 20,000 and is the county seat of Ellis County. We are proud of our outstanding educational opportunities and we have one of the finest medical facilities in western and central Kansas. Much of the economy of Ellis County is based on agriculture related jobs. We are fortunate to be surrounded by productive agricultural land and large underground oil reserves. FHSU athletes compete on the NCAA Division II level. Hays boasts excellent recreational facilities including the Center for Health Improvement, Hays Aquatic Park, Smoky Hill Country Club, Hays Municipal Golf Course, an extensive recreational program, and excellent opportunities for walking, running, and biking. Hays is within 45 minutes of two lakes providing boating and other water sports. The Hays Municipal Airport provides connecting service to both Kansas City and Denver.
