Story about Psychology Department Research
Published
A story about a research partnership
between the FHSU Psychology Department and Larned State Hospital
was published in the Spring 2009 edition of Research Matters, a
publication put out by Fort Hays State University. Several faculty
members, as well as undergraduate and graduate students have played
vital roles in the collaboration and numerous studies. Click

Faculty Member Publishes Article in Journal
of Contemporary Psychotherapy
Dr. Carrie Nassif, Associate Professor of Psychology
and staff psychologist at the Kelly Center, recently had an article
accepted for publication in a future issue of the Journal of Contemporary
Psychotherapy. Dr. Nassif served as the lead author of the article
that was published in collaboration with S. Schulenberg of the University
of Tennessee, R. Hutzell of Knoxville, IA, and J. Rogina of the
University of Nevada, Reno. The article, entitled "Clinical
Supervision and Logotherapy: Discovering Meaning in the Supervisory
Relationship", explored the implementation of logotherapeutic
principles within the context of clinical supervision. Clinical
supervision refers to the process by which practicing psychotherapists
and therapists in training receive guidance and feedback from more
experienced mentors. In her role as a faculty member in the Psychology
Department at Fort Hays, Dr. Nassif teaches graduate courses in
Psychotherapy and Couples Therapy and provides clinical supervision
to graduate students in Clinical Psychology.

Students Present Research at the 2008 American Psychological Association
Annual Convention
Two faculty member and two recent graduates of the graduate program
in the Department of Psychology at Fort Hays State University presented
research findings at the 2008 American Psychological Association
Annual Convention in Boston, MA in August. Dr. Carrie Nassif, Associate
Professor and Staff Psychologist at the Kelly Center, and Melissa
Barb, 2008 graduate of the master’s program in clinical psychology,
co-authored the study entitled “Integrating touch and bodywork
in psychotherapy”. Dr. Heath Marrs, Assistant Professor and
Chair, and Derek Eccles, 2006 graduate of the education specialist
program in school psychology, co-authored the study entitled “Assessment
of limited-english proficient students in a rural Midwestern state.”
Dr. Marrs also co-authored the study “Male academic performance
in college: The role of study skills” with Dr. Stephen Benton,
Senior Research Officer for the IDEA Center, Manhattan, KS.

in Kansas (PERK) Conference
A number of students and faculty presented
research at the 2007 PERK conference at Newman University in Wichita.
Tara Maneth and Sabrina Schwindt's paper entitled
The Relationship Between Coping Skills, Self-Esteem, and Gender
won the award for best undergraduate empirical paper, and Brandi
Day's poster entitled The Importance of Play-Based
Assessment won Best graduate Thoretical/Lit Review.
